"Ash come on you need to find yourself a mate and soon." Ash didn't even look behind him, he knew who was and he didn't want to listen. He didn't want to mate, he was still young in his opinion.
He could mate later in life after he had traveled and had seen all there was to see. He didn't want to handle a mate right now. They were more trouble than what was worth. " mother i keep telling you, i'm not going to look for a mate anytime soon." you could hear the annoyance in his voice, but the queen, Ash's mother would not give up anytime soon.
"no , you listen to me, it is your duty as the prince to find your mate and have an heir, you know this, so why do you keep arguing" Ash sighed "mother-"
"My queen you have a meeting your advisors that will be starting any minute now."
The queen turned to the messenger boy at the door and gave a curt nod. "Thank you. Now Ash before i leave i would like to inform you that there will be a ball in your honor this coming week, every submissive merperson is attending so you will find your mate then."
And with that she turned and swam gracefully out the room. Ash just floated there in shock, his mother, he knew was very persistent but he did not think she would take it this far. She said it would be this coming week how did she expect him to mate with someone that quickly.
Usually when finding your mate it was custom to court them and get to know them before you officially claimed them. She wasn't even giving him time to get to know the other person, expecting them to mate and produce an heir. It was honestly ridiculous.
Ash was so deep in thought he didn't hear his best friend Adam approach from behind, startling him out of his stature. "Ash what's wrong you are usually always guarded and I usually can never sneak up on you like I just did."
Ash just looked at his friend, still trying to get over what his mother said and the anger he felt towards all of this. "I just had a talk with my mother." Ash glanced over at his friend trying to see his reaction. "Yeah what did she say?"
"well, she told me about this great plan she has about me finding my mate." Adam just looked confused.
"Well, what's her big plan, you did tell her you wanted to travel first right." Ash growled
"Of course I told her but no 'you need to find a mate and produce an heir' I'm sick and tired of hearing it, and that women has the decency to hold a ball in my honor in a few days inviting every submissive in the kingdom so I can find my mate on that night."
Ash was fuming with anger, disbelief and betrayal. Adam's eyes grew wide in shock, he was so surprised the queen would go to such drastic measures. "Does your father know about this?" Ash just grunted "if my mother is planning it then of course he knows."
Ash glanced out the window overlooking the city that surrounded the castle, it was his favorite view and always seemed to calm him when he was upset. "Well what are you going to do" Ash smiled at that, he knew just what he was going to do.
"Easy, I reject my mate"
