As soon as the class got over, Aisha came up to me and asked me what our plans would be, if in case we decided to go. I asked her if she was okay with me inviting Isha and Lia too. She said no. She said they probably didn't like her enough to hang out with her. The idea surprised me. I told her that that was so not the case; that they hadn't even met her properly, and they would simply not like someone without even knowing them.
"But they make me uncomfortable," she replied as she looked at me with pleading eyes.
Finally, I decided that it was better to have one more friend who didn't judge me over the circumstances I lived in than have no one other than the ones I already had, I accepted her request. We exchanged our numbers to check with each other to finalize the plans.
Later, when I told Isha and Lia about all of this, they seemed slightly upset about the idea.
"I just hope that if you both become great friends, then she won't have issues with us," Isha finally said. I nodded in reply. Honestly, I hoped so too.
Perhaps they were a little upset about being judged this way. Despite hating it, I felt a certain satisfaction at the idea. For the first time, these two had truly understood what I had been going through all this while. Now they realized what I felt.
I shuddered. These thoughts were a little selfish on my part. I shouldn't think them for my friends. I should be a little more considerate toward the people who were there by me through thick and thin.
Yet, here I was.
Later that day, when I returned home, I sought my mother's permission to go out with Aisha.
"Aisha? Who is Aisha? I've never heard you use that name before," she replied as she eyed me suspiciously.
"Just a girl in my class," I answered. "We weren't that great friends earlier, but recently I've started hanging out with her. Today she asked if I'd be free for a movie." I tried to act nonchalant about the whole business, but inside I was worried sick of what her reply would be.
"Who else will be there?" she asked this time.
"Just the two of us," I replied.
"No Isha and Lia?"
I shook my head no.
"Why?" Maa asked.
"They're busy with some school project of theirs," I told her.
"Which movie will you watch?"
"I don't know, whichever will be there."
"Okay, you can go," she finally nodded. "Just remember to be back on time."
I smiled. Quickly, I messaged Aisha that it's a yes. She instantly replied back saying she'd be at my place by 5:00 p.m. I never asked her how she knew where my house was as I replied back with a wink and went to read a novel.
Sharp at 5 p.m., when the doorbell rang, I was ready. Yet, I stayed in my room in order to allow mom to go and open the door. A strong hunch claimed it would be Aisha on the door. But staying in my room would ensure my mother that I wasn't going rampant with some random boy — that it was indeed a girl I had planned on going to the movies with. She would be much more satisfied if she saw the truth her own self.
I heard some conversation exchange between the two of them. However, I was too far to make out any words. A few minutes later, Mom called me downstairs and I instantly bolted for the stairs. When I met Aisha on the ground floor, we ate a few biscuits, drank some juice and left. Before I closed the gate to the house, I took a quick peek at mother. She was hapy. That was all that I needed to know.
