"Why am I doing this?" I asked Harry. We were standing on the other side of a bridge and I was holding onto the railing for dear life.
"Because you lost the bet and you are fascinated by me so you don't dare back down," he said with a wink. I laughed sarcastically and looked down at the water below me. The bet was that whoever ate our piece of pie the fastest would have to do whatever the winner chooses. I, of course, lost and there I stood, tempting fate.
"Harry, I really can't do this. What- what if I die?" I gulped and looked up at him.
"Well, you won't because I'm jumping with you and I'm an excellent lifesaver!" He grinned cheekily. I looked at him, unsure of how much I truly believed him.
"You know, I always believed I was going to die early and now I'm just tempting fate and basically predicting my own future. I hoped to, one day, have kids and get married-"
He cut me off, "in that order?"
"Oh, yes, exactly!" I said sarcastically. "Anyways, now I'll never have that chance and now my parents will have to plan my funeral instead of my kids."
"Well, only one way to find out!" and with that I was soaring through the air, a scream ripped out of my lungs and I soon felt the cold water engulf me. I swam to the surface and looked around for the evil man.
"Harry!" I screamed.
"I'm right here, babe." I turned around and saw him floating on his back. I swam towards him and he looked over at me. "Quite a trip, wouldn't you agree?" I laughed a single ha! and started floating with him. "The stars are beautiful."
I looked over at his face, "yeah, they really are." We floated for a few minutes and then I started to lose feeling in my extremities. "You know what's not beautiful?" he looked over at me, "me, after I lose my fingers and toes from hypothermia."
"Fine, fine. Let's go." He started swimming towards shore and I followed.
"So, it's about three a.m. and I'm still not tired. Must be the coffee, huh?" he asked me once we were mostly dried and walking towards town.
I nodded, "truth or dare."
He glanced over at me. "Truth."
"Why'd you choose that diner to go into?"
He looked at his shoes. "Well, I couldn't sleep and so I needed something to get my mind off of stuff. So, I was walking around, saw the diner, and sat down next to you. Truth or dare?"
I nodded absorbing this. "I guess you could call it fate. Truth."
"Why'd you trust me when I said I would jump with you?"
I pondered this as we walked down the street. It was a few minutes until I spoke, "to be honest, you just give off this really caring and down-to-earth vibe. I liked the feeling it gave me and so I figured it was trust you or feel lonely."
"Hmmm, well, thank you. I like to believe that I care a lot about others... I guess it's getting pretty late... Where do you live? I'll walk you home."
"Just a few streets away." We continued waking and making small talk. "I live right here," I said as I led him to my doorstep.
"Well, Brighton, it was wonderful meeting you tonight. I hope we can see each other again. Maybe breakfast in the morning?" he half-smiled and grabbed my hands.
"I'd love that. Lou's at nine?" I asked while I intertwined our fingers.
"Sounds perfect," he said and kissed my cheek.
He had started walking back towards the way we came when I yelled out, "hey, Harry?"
He turned around, "yeah?"
"Thanks for walking me home."
"You're welcome. Goodnight, Brighton."
"Goodnight, Harry," I said as I walked into my house.
