I walked into my local CVS with clammy hands and a stress headache. I scanned the aisles searching for a pregnancy test. I wasn't going to let myself believe that I could possibly be pregnant. But, my period was a week late, and it's good to be cautious...right?
I picked up a pregnancy test and walked to the counter. The woman scanned the pregnancy test and it was like I could hear her thoughts, "Oh wow, another pregnant teen. What's with this generation and their raging hormones. They'll just jump in the sack with anyone won't they?". But I'm like that. The only person I've ever slept with was Allen. I love him.
She put the box in a small bag and said, "That's $9.07".
I pulled out a ten dollar bill and in return, she handed me a variety of coins.
I shoved the change in my pocket and grabbed the test before leaving the store.
As I walked the streets on the way back to my apartment I could feel everyone judging me. I knew logically that they probably weren't. But I couldn't shake the feeling that everyone knew I was pregnant, even when I wasn't 100% sure I was myself.
It started sprinkling lightly as soon as I got to the apartment doors. I unlocked the door and stepped inside the warm apartment.
I immediately put the bag on the counter and called out, "Ehren? Are you home?". No answer. I guess he was out with Eric at band practice. I pulled out the test and read a bunch of directions. All though the directions were long it was pretty straight forward. Pee on the stick. Wait. Get the results.
I started walking back to my bathroom with the directions and the stick and threw the box away in the kitchen trash.
I sat down on the toilet with my legs apart, and I stared at the tab sticking out of the test. As I peed on the stick I realized all of this was incredibly real. If the test was positive....I don't even wanna think about that. I counted to ten as I peed because the package said to pee on the tab for that long. Which, who pees that long by the way?
Then you're supposed to put the cap back on the test and put on a flat surface. So I capped it and put it on the counter. I set my phone timer for one minute and pulled my shorts back up. I flushed the toilet and washed my hands and by the time my hands were dry the timer went off. I stared at the face down pregnancy test and took a deep breath before I began to talk to myself. "Okay, Imogen. Don't freak. There's no way you're actually pregnant just pick it up." I reasoned. I snatched the test off the counter and flipped it over like it was any old item. I saw a plus sign on the test and immediately heard white noise. I could feel my face going pale. I took a deep breath and wiped a few tears from my cheeks.
I walked out of the bathroom and saw Ehren sitting at the counter. I jumped and he laughed.
"You alright?" He asked.
"Umm....Yeah?" I replied as more of a question than an answer.
Ehren face went serious and concerned. "For real, is everything alright?" He asked.
I looked down at my hand and saw the test.
"Oh, did you have a pregnancy scare?" He asked.
"Umm....yeah." I answered. I put the test in the trash and walked away.
"Imogen..." He called cautiously.
I turned around and saw him staring into the trash at the positive test. I thought i'd put it face down.
"Does that say that you're pregnant?" He asked.
"Umm...yeah. Kind of. Yes, it does." I confirmed.
"I see..." Ehren said.
There was a lull in the conversation before I let out a groan of frustration.
"I just want to have a glass of wine. Except I can't because I'm pregnant!" I complained.
Ehren smiled slightly at my comment.
"It's not funny..." I sighed. "What do I do?" I asked.
"Well, I can't make that decision for you. No one can. But I think if anyone's opinion but your own mattered it'd be Allen's." He pointed out.
I nodded, "You're right." I agreed. "I have to tell him, don't I?" I asked.
"Well, yeah. But you don't have to right now. You could wait a little bit. Not too long, though." Ehren stated.
I nodded and sat on the couch.
He came and sat next to me. He grabbed the remote and asked, "What do you wanna watch?".
I chuckled. "Umm, 'Degrassi: Next Class'." I joked.
"The show I'm on?" He asked.
"I was joking. Umm, what about 'Orange Is The New Black'?" I asked.
He nodded and turned on a random episode.
As the theme song played I laid my head on Ehren's shoulder and we watched the lesbian activity on our screens. I placed my hand over my stomach. What had I gotten myself into?
