morty didn't show up to class this morning.

you caught a glimpse of his yellow shirt in the cafeteria, but shrugged it off as you set your tray down on what you assumed to be an empty table.

it wasn't long before you heard a group of footsteps approaching, then abruptly stopping in their tracks.

you glanced up from your meal, and into the eyes of a girl's.

specifically, a ginger's eyes.

"excuse me, you're in our seat." the anonymous girl stated.

you laughed shortly, and stood up, grasping onto the edges of your plate.

"i mean, in all technicality, it isn't your seat but you know" you scoffed "whatever, who cares."

you moved your legs out from underneath the tables bench, and attempted to walk away until speech stopped you in your pursuit.

"i like you, you're funny." she giggled, sitting down next to where you were seated.

you turned halfways, and looked right at her.

"uh, thanks?" you responded blankly.

"you're (y/n) right? the new girl in our math class?"

"yep, that's me. how did you ever figure that out?" you chortled.

she started to laugh, a soft, pure laugh. you hadn't received any of those in a while.

"you can sit with us." she gestured to the other female across from her, a teen of darker complexity with a set of red hoops.

you sat near the orange-haired girl, and took a bite out of the bland tasting sandwich on your dish.

"im jessica."

you swallowed quickly in order to respond to her, avoiding any awkwardness.

"nice to meet you jessica."

.

jessica seemed like a cliche "bitch" from a distance, which you can obviously understand why.

i mean after all, at first she did come off as one but during the short classes you had together you came to understand she was just a normal girl. this sparked the beginning of some sort of mutual friendship.

you had some stuff in common, such as curiosities and interests in things.
this put your nerves to ease, and let you relax for a while.

it wasn't until the mention of morty, that you began to feel a bit unsettled.

not much unsettled, just maybe uncomfortable.

"you're right across from morty in math, right?" jessica questioned.

you hummed in response, nodding your head.

"he's odd, but I guess he's pretty nice." she added.

"uh, yeah." you turned your head sideways out the window, shifting in your seat slightly.

"he came out of a portal once, oh my god, and with his grandfather too!" she chuckled.

"portal?" you asked, startled of course, at the sudden mention of what was supposed to be "impossible."

her laughter died down to a halt, as jessica sat her hand down on the desk.

"yeah. i don't know too much about it, but i did hear that he had only been in school for seven hours that month! crazy, right?"

"damn." you huffed, running a hand over your scalp.

turning back to jessica, you smiled.
"bet you it'll happen again this month."

she smiled.
"most likely it will."

comical relief sure was a savior.
.

you put in the combination to your locker,  and retrieved a study book you were sure of not using and another binder full of papers.

shutting the door, and making sure to lock it, you whipped around only to be met with what you made out to be morty's face.

you stepped back, with one hand on your chest as you laughed.

"son of a bitch, you scared the hell out of me."

"oh! u-um im sorry!" morty quickly apologized, offering his hand out to help you stabilize your stance.

you grabbed it, and pulled yourself forward a bit.

"s-so do you still want to c-come over today? i mean, y-y-you don't have to! that's up to you!"

morty was a person who jumped conclusions and worries too much, that's for sure.

what you weren't sure of is if you remembered to ask your parents if you were able to go.

nothing a text couldn't accomplish.

"mmyeah I'll come over, give me a sec. i forgot to uh..text my mom."

"o-ok! that's fine." morty awkwardly stammered.

you pulled out your phone and brought up your mothers number, texting her in a rush.

"going over to a friends house be home soon"

it wasn't long before you heard a buzz in response.

"no you aren't, you're coming home."

you sighed, and thought of a lie.

"too late already here bye"

you turned off your device and stuck it in your back pocket.

"she said yes." you smirked.
