Summary: since Namjoon knows that you’re not Korean, he wanted to surprise you by showing you that he had taken lessons to learn your native language. Things seem to go just fine until he starts pronouncing some words the wrong way, which actually sound like insults in your language.

Namjoon was acting weird lately. It wasn’t like he wouldn’t talk to you. He wasn’t ignoring you, and he wasn’t bugging you in any other way either. He was just pretty weird, but not in a bad way, you thought. He carried a ton of books around and he spent most of his time in his room doing stuff. He was probably working on a new song.
You had just finished cooking dinner. You were humming to yourself and you were so focused on your thoughts that you didn’t hear your boyfriend entering the kitchen.
He greeted you as always, yet you couldn’t help but widen your eyes after hearing his words.
You turned around to look at Namjoon, who had one of the proudest and dorkiest smiles ever printed on his face. You smiled as well once you saw how happy he looked, but you still weren’t able to act normally.
You were just… Shocked.
-Are you surprised?- he asked, his sweet smile not leaving his face. It looked like he was wider and brighter, instead.
-Of course I am…- you said, finally realizing what was happening. You laughed happily as you put the food on the table. -I didn’t know you could speak my native language.-you said. You were smiling as well.
Namjoon sat down, looking at you. He looked really proud of himself and it made your heart flutter. You loved him and you knew he was pretty smart, but you really didn’t think that he would actually spend some of his precious time learning your native language.
Your smile disappeared all of a sudden. He had just said “hello”, it wasn’t like he had just made an elaborated speech in a language that wasn’t Korean or English. Perhaps he had just learnt how to say good morning and such things. But after all, you didn’t mind. Namjoon had still had the cute idea to greet you in that cute way, and that was enough to make you happy.
-I know what you’re thinking.- he said as he swallowed his ramen. -But no, I learnt more than just “hello”.-
Before you could say anything, your boyfriend stood up and walked to the center of the room. You stared at him, curious to know what would happen now.
He made a little bow.
-Hello, I think you’re really pretty tonight.- he said. -Do you want to talk with me so that I can improve? That could be useful.-
He showed his dimples once again, making you flustered. His pronounciation was actually pretty good, sign that Namjoon had planned everything a long time ago and that he had worked really hard to sound good.
-Please sit down.- you smiled. -How did you learn that?- you asked, talking in your native language.
You noticed that Namjoon’s cheeks were turning a bit red. You feared that you were talking too fast for him.
-Am I talking too fast?- you asked shily.
-No… No no. It’s just… You are indeed very pretty tonight.-
You felt your heart skipping a few beats.
-Did you cook this?- he said.
Despite how bad you felt for laughing at him, you couldn’t help it. He looked at you in confusion.
-I’m sorry.-you said, still giggling. -You just… You shouldn’t say that word like that.-
-Why not?-
-If you pronounce it like that, it means slut.-
Namjoon turned red and managed to fall off the chair, making you laugh again.
-I’m sorry.- he whispered, sitting down once again. -I’ll make sure to be more careful.-
Your laughter made him understand that he had got another word wrong.
-What did I say this time?- he asked, as red as a tomato.
-You told me.. You told me to fuck a cucumber.- you managed to say between your fit of giggles.
-Okay wait, I got this one.- he took a deep breath. -You smell like roses.- he said, and he smiled trying to look convincing.
You were almost suffocating because of your laughter. You just couldn’t stop.
-I didn’t know I stinked like a cow.- you snorted. -You used the wrong verb Joonie. You’re basically one insult away from starting a war.-
He got up from the chair and walked out of the room, looking sad and embarrassed.
You stopped laughing and ran after him.
-Hey!- you called. -Wait. I wasn’t laughing at you! It’s just that… Your mistakes were really funny.- you said, starting to laugh again.
He sighed.
-I’m an idiot, am I right?- he said. He looked very sad.
You felt bad.
You quickly grabbed his shoulders and kissed him sweetly. He didn’t react, but as soon as you moved away you could see his pink cheeks and his shy smile.
-It was cute of you to do something like that.- you told him as you smiled and hugged him. -Thank you. 감사합니다*.-
He returned the hug and kissed your head.
-I love you.- he told you. -I can say that!-

*kamsahamnida: a very formal way to say thank you in Korean.
