Chapter 10: Making A FriendI walked into the entrance hall to see that it was almost time for classes, and I didn't have any clue where to go. Everyone was leaving the Great Hall, so I stayed by the wall as to not be noticeable. But despite my attempts Lily walks over to me.
"Professor McGonagall asked me to give me your time table." she says with a smile.
"Thanks." I muttered quietly.
"What class do you have first?" she questioned, breaking the silence as we walked up the stairs.
I looked at my timetable. "I have Transfiguration with Ravenclaws."
"So do I!" Lily exclaimed. "Let's go!"
I allowed myself to be dragged through the corridors to the transfiguration classroom, seeing that I don't know where to go. We arrived at the classroom several minutes before the bell. Most of the class was already inside including Alice, Marlene, Cheyenne, the James boy, and the Sirius boy. And Remus.
Why me?!
Luckily he was too busy talking to his friends to notice me as I sat down in an empty seat at the back of the class. The chairs were in pairs so there was no one to sit by me. Remus was sitting at the front by himself, I guess because his buddies wanted to sit at the back of the room.
It was time for the class to begin, and the teacher still wasn't here. All there was was a cat sitting on the teachers desk. I suspected that wasn't l there was to the situation, though. And I was right as the cat kept off the table and transformed into Professor McGonagall. She was an animagus, I had about them in a book.
"Good morning class, today we are going to be talking about animagi. Now who would like to explain what an animagus is?" McGonagall questioned. I liked how straightforward she started the lesson. She wasn't one to waste time on unimportant talk.
I didn't dare raise my hand even though I knew what the answer was. I saw Remus raise his hand though.
"Yes Mister Lupin?"
"An animagus is a witch or wizard who is able to morph into an animal at will."
"That is correct, 5 points to Gryffindor." The professor said. "An animagus is in fact a witch or wizard that can morph into an animal."
I got out my parchment, quill, and ink like everyone else and started taking notes. I learned all about animagi. How they are able to communicate with animals in their animagi form, how certain characteristics determine ones animagi form. Like their patronus or personality. I found it all very fascinating.
But I became particularly intrigued when Professor McGonagall started talking about the Seraphim. "But animagi aren't the only things that can morph into and animal. There are creatures known as the Seraphim, they are sometimes referred to as angels. They are able to morph into their sacred animal, the dove, using a skill called animalism. Animalism is often confused with animagi, but it is much different because to use animalism you must be born with it unlike animagi. We will study Seraphim later though, now I believe it is time to leave."
The Seraphim, the name itself held ancient power. I wanted to know more.
Unfortunately I had to attend History of Magic with Hufflepuff. I headed to the classroom using a map, and sat down at the back of the classroom again. Looks as if I had every class with Remus, as he walked in once more and sat at the front of the classroom.
Class started and I was surprised to see that the teacher was a ghost called Professor Binns. Apparently he had fallen asleep in the staff room and died. But his ghost just got up and continued teaching.
The class was incredibly boring, but I pushed through the sleepiness that wanted to overtake me and took notes on the goblin rebellions.
Lunch was after that class, but I skipped it heading to the library instead. I was on a mission to find out more about the Seraphim.
As I entered the library I gave a wave to the librarian, Madame Pince, before I started scanning the shelves. When I thought I found something I pulled out a book from the shelf, only to accidentally drop it. I reached down to pick it up, but suddenly BONK!
I hit my head on something. I looked up to see none other than Remus Lupin. Just great. "Stella?" he asked, shocked.
"Ummmmmmmmm...." was all that came out before I dashed out of the room. All I was thinking was to not hurt him, not to burden him with myself.
I could hear him chasing after me, but I just ran on. "Stella, wait! I just want to talk!" Remus yelled.
To my own surprise I did stop. I have no idea why, but I did. I turned around and hugged Remus around his middle. I wanted to deny it, but the truth is I couldn't. I missed Remus. We spent one afternoon together, and I felt the connection between us.
I quickly released him though as soon as I realized what I was doing. I felt the absence of him like a hole was taken out of me. Remus was standing there in complete confusion. I don't blame him, one minute I'm running from him, and the next I'm hugging him. I must look pretty bipolar.
"You wanted to talk?" I asked him hesitantly.
"Um, yes. I have a couple of questions as to what exactly happened to you in first year." he looked so concerned. I almost broke down and told him everything. I was deprived of human contact, and all I wanted was another hug.
"My father had a last minute change as to where I would attend school." I told him sadly.
"Where did you go? Why did he move you?" Remus questioned desperately.
"I went to Beauxbatons Academy. " I answered, deliberately ignoring the second question. I couldn't tell him, I wouldn't ruin him.
"But, why? Stella, I was worried. You could have been killed or kidnapped! And I wouldn't have know." I felt so guilty. He's makes it sound as though I abandon him in first year, and in a way I guess I did.
"Remus, that's not a tale I'm quite ready to tell. What happened between me and my father didn't exactly have a happy ending." I couldn't meet his eyes, afraid of what is see there. He moved his hands onto my shoulders.
"It's not healthy to bottle up stuff, trust me I would know. " Remus said sincerely, I could tell he was telling the truth.
"I know." I muttered. "I just don't want to relive that particular part of my past to someone I barely know." That was a partial lie, I mainly just didn't want to hurt him.
"Well when you're ready to tell, know that I'm right here for you. Always." he smiled at me. I looked into his eyes and saw he was being honest. He really did mean it. I hugged him tight, which he returned gladly.
"Does this mean we are friends?" I asked awkwardly.
"I don't see why not." he gave me another smile, from his unseeingly unlimited amount. "Now seeing that we missed lunch, would you like to accompany me to our next class?"
"Onward!" I said louder than usual. We walked, arms linked, to Double Charms with Ravenclaw.
I had made my first real friend, and I couldn't have been happier.
I was 13 years old.
