Chapter Two
I despised how I left things. I would never have, under any other occasion, left things like that. I had left my best friend on the fire escape, nearly dead. I didn't even do anything but call the police and left. That was incredibly selfish of me and I regret it. I was only thinking about saving my own tail. I was ashamed of what I did.
I left the scene with my belongings and any trace of me ever existing there. It wasn't much, I carried it all in a black backpack. My face was hidden with a dark hoodie jacket; I had to avoid security cameras and any local official eye. There was probably plenty of times my face was on the security cameras. I can't be seen there now, since there was a crime.
What scares me and makes me want to avoid them at all costs though is the new and advanced technology. After the Ancients, we call those before the nuclear war and natural disasters that, had all been eliminated they learned from the scripts they left behind. Advancing the previous works of other geniuses. Since I've been on the down low for so long though, I have no idea what is in store for me if caught. I don't plan on finding out either.
I was such a pathetic friend. I just left her, I took my dog and my valuables, and just left her there for authorities to save her. To question her, and the worse part of it all, she won't have an idea what happened. I swore I wouldn't ever use my abilities on friends. But I did, I took her memories of me. She won't ever remember me again.
I was along the city walls in the dark alleyways near the town's exit. I had to get over the half mile high walls. I had to do it without causing a scene. I can't go over, and I rather not go under.. The sewers are grotesque, I feel an actual monster can live down there. I guess I'm going to have to go through. I scavenged my thoughts and memories and I recalled someone I met on the road when I was a kid. Aha! I couldn't believe I nearly forgot about that.
Someone also on the run told me that there were rumours of a wall that had a hidden passage way if you could find it. Somewhere along the west side of the city walls. I was currently southwest and decided I'll go check it out. I stayed near the walls, but far enough where I can easily hide, my dog trailed behind me as a guard.
When I arrived at the west end of the city I started to stare the walls down. I don't even know what I'm looking for. Glaring, I muttered to myself, "I hate everything." I studied the wall so intently, looking for a flaw, or an opening, something! If it's not on the wall, it could be near the wall! It had to be something that tried to fit in but didn't necessarily blend in the best.
I started rummaging through the trash, crunching and crackling through the junk on the abandoned sidelines of the city. Behind me, I heard footsteps approaching cautiously. I panicked when in search for a shelter to take cover in. I can't be seen. They'll take me in, question me about my whereabouts and who I am; if they knew who I was they would ask where I've been. I can't afford to spill everything.
I found a pile of crates toppled over and some still stacked. I had to take my chances and try to blend in with the dusty, old, and dirty wooden crates. I grabbed my pup and placed him in a crate and swiveled under and between some boxes, taking cover.
Just as I had dispersed, a man came through the alleyway looking around, gun pointed. He shouted, "If someone is out here, show yourself." When he looked around, he questioned his judgement seeing no one around. Slowly he walked to an abandoned house and lifted a welcome mat. It revealed a hatch which probably led to the passageway and he saw that it was untouched causing him to shake off his suspicions.
As he walked back to where he came from, I slivered out and up to go to where he was previously standing and I lifted up the mat. It revealed a hidden passageway, it was old and rotted just like the crates I was hiding under. I highly doubted that people have gone through the passage for many years now. For all I know I really wouldn't have found it without government officials to lead me there, otherwise I wouldn't have found it on my own.
