Just as she had anticipated, soon Zena was staring up through a gaping hole in the ceiling of the tunnel.

“There’s just one problem, Brian,” she told him.

“What is it?”

“How are we going to get up there?” she inquired.

“Oh, actually, that’s the fun part,” he answered knowingly. “Check this out.” He reached into his pack and extracted a rope. Then, showing off his Western roots, he formed it into a lasso and threw it up, landing it around a rock at the top. Finally, he pulled and the rope tightened around it.

“Now we just climb,” he concluded smoothly.

Using their crampons and the rope, first Zena and then Brian ascended the icy slope towards the hole and finally they were both out.

Zena was overjoyed. “I finally get cell service! I can call for help now!”

“That’s great!”

She called the San Juan tours service and they told her they would send one of their smaller boats to come get them. They were finally safe.

It was all downhill from there. Soon, both Zena and Brian were home, and it was time to make amends.

“Look, Brian, I’m sorry I got so mad at you for forgetting the food. It was an honest mistake, and I shouldn’t have blown up at you like that. It was my fault we got trapped in that cave in the first place,” Zena started.

“No, you were right; I was being irresponsible, and besides, no one really got hurt. Aside from this ankle, of course.”

“Again… sorry about that,” she apologized.

“Oh, stop apologizing. I’m fine… but thanks for caring. This is why I love you.” He smiled a really cheesy smile and leaned in for a kiss. Zena kissed him back and then they shared a long hug, relieved that they were safe but also delighted that they were now closer than ever.
