1 / Just Hold On

Rain grew up in a world of struggle. Things were never easy for her. She was constantly trying to make things better and fighting to make things right. She was a survivor in more ways than one.

She was the only one of family to get out of the house fire of 1997. Rain was barely four at the time and she just ran as far as her little legs could take her until a firefighter came and saved her.

Rain went to live with her grandparents after the fire. They were the only family she had left. Her parents had died and her older siblings had passed. Grandma Pat and Papaw Johnny were her only hope.

That hope was crushed at the age of eleven when Rain began having abnormal feelings. When she realized that she liked girls. She first told her grandmother about her discovery. That was a mistake.

Her grandparents kicked her out on the streets that a gay grandchild was no grandchild of theirs and as far as they were concerned, all their grandbabies perished in the flames. Rain was now nothing but a mistake to the only family she had ever known.

Luckily for her, Rain kept in contact with the firefighter that saved her, Taya Cox. Taya was an amazing woman with two little boys of her own and she wasted no time in inviting Rain into her home and eventually adopting her after a long battle for rights against the family that didn't want her.

Rain was finally done fighting and she had nothing to worry about anymore.

She was wrong.

Taya passed away when Rain was nineteen. It was cancer and there was just nothing they could do to save her. And once again, Rain was broken.

It seemed like everytime things got better, something ultimately tore it down. She wasn't allowed to be happy and pain was all she had ever known.

Rain was the only adult left in her little brother's lives and so she now had an apartment in the city and they lived with her. It was really sad. They had lost their mom so young and Rain knew what that felt like.

"Rhys, get the hell up. First day of Freshman year!" Rain yelled at the eldest of the brothers and smacked him with a pillow to wake him. Rhys was never a morning person and was usually the problem child, but that came with being a teenager.

Rain quickly threw on a button-up and went to the nursery. She had to feed the baby.

In the nursery was twelve year old Peter trying to rock the baby back to sleep, but baby Matthew was not having it.

"Pete, go get ready. Matt needs to eat." Rain said, taking her shirt off after her brother left the room.

Matt was her child. At one point, a year ago, Rain was engaged to a very nice guy and back in contact with her grandparents who seemed to like that she was in a committed relationship with a man. Rain got pregnant the night James proposed and they were really happy.

Then Rain fucked it up.

She had sex with his little sister and that was the end of their relationship and James's relationship with his son. That left Rain with not only teenage boys to care for, but also an infant.

After she finished feeding Matt, she picked him up, burping him and walked back to the living room where the boys were waiting to say goodbye.

Despite the fact that her brothers claimed they were grownups (mostly Rhys), they loved their sister to pieces and would do anything for her. They also always had to kiss her cheek and tell her bye as well as love on their nephew for a few before they headed to school.

"Addie's going to take you to school today, okay? I have to go to work a little earlier than usual." Rain explained and the boys nodded. They didn't mind. They adored Addison.

Addison was Rain's girlfriend. She was really present in the boys's lives, but they didn't seem to mind. Addison was right across from them in the apartment. They were neighbours and they just clicked from there on.

Rain loved that Addison didn't mind all the chaos that went on over here. She didn't mind the boys or the baby. She loved driving the kids to school and babysitting Matt. She was a godsend really.

"Hey boys, ready for school?" Addison smiled as she walked into the Cox apartment.

It was a mess. There were clothes strung all around the place and bowls piled in the sink, but Addison never minded. She was a maid. She cleaned for a living and so she generally cleaned their apartment for free. Well, generally her paycheck was sex with Rain, but the boys didn't need to know that.

"Yep." Peter answered. Rhys was a bit too busy texting.

"Hey babe. I'll be back in time to watch Matt. Go get changed." Addison smiled and pecked Rain's lips.

Addison gathered the boys and headed out the car, leaving Rain alone with her thoughts and a five month old.

Rain sat Matt in his crib and got a bottle a milk ready for when he got hungry and put it in the fridge. Rain went and got ready, putting on her usual attire for work.

Rain worked as an assistant for Quinn Sheldon at Passion Savvy Modeling Agency. She was currently taking any job available in the department. She had just worked as a waitress for the benefit last night and she'd be the secretary today as the usual secretary, Zoë, was on her honeymoon now and Rain was the only one able to cover her shift.

Not long after she got changed, Addison came back with breakfast for Rain to take to work and they said their goodbyes and went their separate ways. Rain to the car and Addison to the baby.

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Rain had been at the front desk for half the day by now and it was quite uneventful. No wonder Zoë hated her job. Every now and then a model would come in late. It didn't happen often. If you missed your shoot, too bad. No paycheck for you. A few business called, but otherwise, Rain had done basically nothing for almost four hours.

Finally someone new had walked through the door. She was blonde and rather small, very pretty. Blue eyes. She lookef familiar and Rain finally recognized her as the girl that ran her over last night.

Rain sighed, trying to duck her head, but to no avail, the girl noticed her presence.

She couldn't remember her name. Not even letter it started with. Probably because she didn't give a fuck at the time.

Vera? Thea? Tess? Maybe it was Adelaide. No, Allison. Annabelle? It could be Aubrey. No, it's Olivia. Fuck, none of these could be right.

"Rain, hi! It's me, Perrie, from the banquet." the girl introduced herself once again.

Rain snapped her fingers in realization, "Right, Perrie. What can I help you with?"

"Oh, I was wondering if it would be okay if I brought Quinn's lunch up to her? She forgot it again." Perrie explained.

"What, is she your girlfriend or something?" Rain asked.

"No, no. Just my roommate." Perrie dismissed.

"Sure. Knock yourself out." Rain rolled eyes, watching as the blonde basically skipped her way to Quinn's office.

Perrie was so perky and full of life and a person as bitter as Rain was not exactly a great match when matched together, but fate has a funny way of working things out.
