Chapter 1
11/25 9:28 a.m
I never understood the concept of how it all worked. It always confused me that something so fast could be so easy to control. But I guess being from Georgia never helped my case I had never seen a subway train until today. So I suppose I could understand why I didn't know what to make of it all. Back home if you wanted to get somewhere you took the tractors unless your family could afford a car. But in my case it was either the tractor or walk. The tunnel I was standing in was suddenly filled with wind and light blowing my brown hair in my face indicating that the train was arriving. I looked at my watch it was 9:28 a.m and the train was early, it was supposed to be coming at 9:30 a.m.
Whatever its fine I'll just start coming early I thought to myself. It was my first time going downtown, ever. Being from the country doesn't really do much for me either. I was just so used to visiting small towns and visiting other farms other than my own it just seems so different. I never realized that I would feel so awkward, even when I had to explain to my parents that I was moving out of Georgia to earn a medical degree at the college I was going to attend. Even then the college wasn't in a huge city like New York.
The subway took off, I was standing when started moving I grabbed onto one of the poles but I wanted to sit down, I had barely gotten any sleep the other night trying to contain my excitement for work. It was my first day at The New York City Medical Emergency Center downtown, and I've always wanted to be a doctor. The train wasn't to busy either so I quickly found a seat and started checking my phone. There was someone next to me but I didn't pay attention to them I was to busy trying to see the news to find out if there were any stories on injured people that might be treated at the hospital I work at now.
I suddenly felt the train jerk hard and the lights started flickering. Everyone who was standing was on the floor of the train now. What happened, did we crash? I thought to myself. I had hit my head on the back of the seat in front of me from the sudden irk of the train. Resting it in my hands, I looked to my right at the person sitting next to me. He was wearing a gray hoodie, with sunglasses, and blue jeans. I was staring at him and he didn't look up. But the odd thing was that he didn't seemed phased by whatever happened to the train at all. He just continued to stare at his phone and didnt move.
Is he in shock or something. Um, excuse me sir, are you alright? I asked. He didnt answer he just continued to look down. They say that New Yorkers are rude but I never thought they were this insensitive. I thought to myself. I shook my head, Its probably nothing. Hes probably just having a bad day and whatever's going on isnt helping. I reassured myself. As far as I knew he was probably just one of those emo people who doesnt have any friends. I set my mind on that assessment, and just as I did I heard a ding from the P.C with one of the train conductors.
Ladies and gentlemen we apologize for the inconvenience, for the train collided with another unidentified one. We advise you to keep calm as we survey the damage, but for now another train will come and take you to your destinations. Again we apologize for the delay, but we sincerely hope you have a wonderful rest of your day. Thank you for your cooperation.
Just as the conductor finished the lights came back on. Relieved I looked to my right to see that the man was no longer sitting next to me. I almost fell out of my seat, he was nowhere to be seen. How on earth did he just leave without out me noticing, its impossible. I was so confused he was right next to me when the conductor finished his little apology speech. But when the lights came back on he vanished without a trace. Almost as if he were a ghost. Okay now youre just getting ahead of yourself there are no such things as ghosts. Someone must have noticed him leave and I just didnt. But the truth was that I was really creeped out, I didnt exactly know what to make of the whole situation. There was no way to open any of the windows and I wouldve heard the doors open so the only way he couldve escaped was...
I looked up puzzled when I suddenly heard a whistle in the distance. The other train was coming to take us downtown.
