I locked the door to my new room behind me and quickly followed behind the fast paced Alpha who I'm sure was trying to stay as far away from me as I was trying to stay from him. "Could you at least slow down a bit, your legs are like twice as long as mine."

Jack stopped with a huff and turned to face me, the annoyance evident on his face. "I have a schedule to stick to and your little tantrum has already cost me half my day."

I stopped maybe 2 feet from him and craned my neck slightly to look him in the eyes. "I apologise. Happy?" I wasn't actually sorry, I didn't care at all at this point.

He quickly closed the distance and roughly grabbed my face, pulling me close to him and crashing my lips against his. The ferocity behind the kiss would've toppled me over if it weren't for his hold on me. I grabbed onto his wrists and held him against me, the longing to have someone hold me overpowering my growing hatred for him.

If we hadn't have been in a hallway that was crowded with people I might've thought he meant the kiss.

I opened my eyes and found Jack staring straight at me, unreadable emotions swirling through his eyes. "L-let go of me."

His gaze softened for a split second before he returned to his hardened self and stepped away. "Let's keep moving, the king is a busy man and he's graciously granted you time to speak to him."

And just like that he was back to his stoic mode. It was like flipping a coin with Jack and most of the time I wasn't prepared for what side it would land on.

By the time we got to the King's study there was no trace of the little encounter we had just had, not a hair was out of place on Jack's perfect head and I had managed to fix my waves back into a loose bun.

As we waited for the door to open I slightly turned to Jack and tried to catch his gaze. "What was that back there? A display of dominance to make sure I knew my place?" I scoffed loud enough for him to hear and shook my head.

"Shut up."

My mouth dropped open with shock and just as I was about to fire back a retort the door opened and the king stood staring at us both.

"Close your mouth Titus, you'll catch flies."

I looked between both the Crescent men and started to notice similarities between them: the way they held them self, the colour of their eyes, the curve of their nose. They looked like they could've been father and son but that wasn't possible, the king was Jack's maternal uncle. I'd seen portraits of Jack's mother and he didn't look anything like her, it was almost as if-

I was wrenched from my moment of thought by an arm tugging me into the office and pushing me into a chair. "Ow."

"Jack says you have conditions for me. I find it quite hilarious that you think you're in a position to start demanding things from your king!"

I didn't flinch at his volume, I had gotten used to men shouting at me these days. "Yes I have a condition, I already spoke to Jack about it so I don't see why I need to speak to you. Besides, the royal family are more for show now. Everybody knows the Alpha council holds more power than you."

The anger that seeped off of the king started to change the atmosphere of the room, it had become so suffocating that by instinct I grabbed Jack's hand and pulled him closer. When he pulled his hand from mine I thought I had pushed it too far until the same hand came to rest on my shoulder, pulling me closer to him.

"Uncle, I'm sure Mary did not mean what she said. I've told you how she rarely thinks before she speaks." Jack's hold on my shoulder tightened ever so slightly as his eyes met mine and I had to fight the sudden urge to yelp.
