It's you!

I like to think about how their timeline would be something along the lines of having that sudden and inexplicably lingering sense of interest/curiosity the first time the meet at their examinations. Some days I think about how for reasons unknown to even himself, Wang Qing finds that his eyes keep on coming back to the small figure that's babbling nervously into his phone in front of the examination room. His eyes track the figure that's pacing up and down the corridor, and his ears strain to hear the little snippets of conversation that drift his way as the man walks past.

"What if I don't make the cut," he hears.

"-everyone else here is a fucking giant, I swear - "

"-supposed to be encouraging me," he can't help but overhear again the next time the lithe figure walks past.

Wang Qing tries to occupy himself with reciting the lines of his poem in his mind. He's visualising how he is going to perform but his thoughts are interrupted by the sound of bell-like laughter and he glances up again to see the same guy - now leaning against the wall - giggling into his phone. He finds himself leaning forward, wanting to be a part of whatever it is that's making this person sound like that. He catches himself when he hears the examiner's voice, telling them to enter the examination hall and confusedly shakes himself out of it.

During the exams, the other performances pass by in a blur and then suddenly it's his turn. He looks around until he sees the familiar figure again. He's slouched down low in his chair and playing with the hem of his shirt. Wang Qing is suddenly struck with the desire to have this guy's attention. Stretching up so that he's at full height, Wang Qing clears his throat and begins to recite the poem he'd prepared. Look at me, he thinks, eyeing the man out of the corner of his eye. Turn this way, he implores and as he goes into the second verse he sees the guy sit up and his heart leaps into his throat.

By the time he's finished, the man is leaning forward and Wang Qing can feel the heat of his gaze like a brand and he can't help the grin that spreads across his face.

As he walks back to his seat, he can't help but glance at the other man again and their eyes meet for a brief second. Upon making eye contact, the other guy gives him a small smile and a dorky little thumbs up and Wang Qing quickly hides his smile behind his hand and gives the guy a nod of thanks.

When all the performances are finished and Wang Qing is walking out of the hall, he tries to look for the smaller man again but isn't able to find him.

The next time they meet, it's been a few months and the incident (if it could even be called that) is pushed to the back of his mind. That is until he sees the guy again on a group date one of his classmates set up. He wanders into the restaurant late, he'd only agreed to come to make up the numbers after all.

Wang Qing knows he doesn't need something like a group date to get some (he's got a phonebook full of numbers to prove it), so he's not expecting to spend too long here anyways. As he rounds the corner, he hears a familiar laugh and he pauses. He glances over at the people who are seated at the other end of the table and sure enough he sees the smaller guy from examination day.

Inexplicably, his mind begins to do a quick check of his appearance and he feels compelled to sit a little straighter, laugh a little looser. He's trying his best to not be bad company to the girl sitting next to him, and so far he's doing fine, but his mind keeps drifting to the man at the far end of the table and he is somehow is hyperaware of all the guy's movements.

When the other man starts to get up, making noises about needing the bathroom, Wang Qing decides to get up as well and times it so that they'll meet at the door. Before they even get there Wang Qing notices the guy is squinting in his direction and as they get a bit closer the guy is already smiling at him.

"Hey! We met once right? At the exam?"

"Yeah, that was me. I read the poem," Wang Qing says feeling warm all over. He blames the alcohol.

"Thought so, it was amazing," the guy says swaying a little, Wang Qing puts a guiding hand on his arm as he walks them towards the bathroom. "I'm Feng JianYu, but most people just call me Dayu," the guy suddenly says, taking no notice of the hand on his arm, he looks at Wang Qing expectantly.

"Wang Qing," Wang Qing murmurs distractedly. "Dayu, huh," he likes the sound of it. He looks the guy up and down and jokes, "the smallest guy at the examinations has the guts to call himself Dayu?"

The guy laughs again and hits Wang Qing's chest playfully, "hey! Back home, I was the tallest guy in my class you know?" Wang Qing finds himself wondering how someone could possibly be so relentlessly sunny and is hopelessly charmed.

By the time they're making their way back from the bathroom, no-one looking at them would suspect they had just met. Wang Qing ends up spending the rest of the night by the smaller mans' side and surprises himself by staying until the party is over. He walks the other man back after the party ('wow Qingge, who would've guessed someone who looks like you could be such a gentleman'), and discovers the other man's dorm is on the floor below his. Once he's delivered him back to his roommates, he starts making his way up to his own floor and smiles.

Notes: I think at this point everyone is aware of the story of how they hit off right away. And their chemistry really shows. Now that the first meeting is out of the way, I can't wait to get writing about the rest of their journey because I have so many headcannons about this couple it is ridiculous - I am essentially writing the fic that I want to read.

Any recs you have are welcome because this fandom seems to be the cutest and friendliest place ever (but oh so small!) - and I want to glut myself on anything and everything about this pair (:

Firm believer that with these two, the first time they really hooked up was really for CA - but I'll be damned if anyone tries to tell me that there wasn't an insane amount of, lets say, tension & close calls beforehand. I'm the type who likes to fantasise about the lead up— which is why Qingyu is slowly becoming my ultimate CP.
