Right after school, Tori and I sat in her car. I threw my backpack on the back seat and sighed. Ever since that Britany girl mentioned Austin that morning, every girl from school has been planning to find him. I ran a hand through my hair and looked at Victoria. She was staring at me, like she was scared.
“What?” Her lips parted making me think she was going to say something. Nothing came out. “Tori?”
“Why are you so worked up?” I looked away from her. “You can’t have Austin in your basement forever.”
“I know, okay? I’m worried about how he'll feel. Just this morning he remembered his girlfriend and he has a wound on the side of his head. And that wound is the size of my thumb.” I blew up. I knew it was going to happen.
One of the many reasons why I didn’t want to tell Austin the truth about himself was because of his fear. Something told me his girlfriend was his biggest fear at the moment. I remembered the note his mom sent to his fans. Austin was hoping they could work things out and get back together. If he was famous that meant he spent almost every day busy and didn’t have time for her. What if she was going to hurt him? Why didn’t Austin get to her place?
“Alright loca, let’s go pick up your sister.” I shrugged and muttered a quick whatever. Tori started the engine of her old Volvo to leave the school parking lot.
On the way to Alejandra’s school, Tori and I didn’t say a word to each other. I knew she was kind of mad at me. I’ve never blown up like that in front of her. Well just once. And that was when our school counselor was giving us therapy after the first two fights we had in the hallways. I couldn’t help but feel angry at myself. I was such an idiot. We picked up Alejandra and headed to my house.
“Do you think he’s still at the basement?” I looked over at Alejandra. There was some sort of worry in her eyes and I tried my best to not say anything out of place.
“He can’t go anywhere Ale. He doesn’t remember how he got here.” She nodded. I looked over at Tori and motioned for her to follow us.
We all entered the house and they both made it to the kitchen to sit down. I made some sandwiches for us and one for Austin. I poured some juice in cups and handed two to the girls in front of me. I grabbed another cup and Austin’s sandwich. Excusing myself, I headed to the basement. I walked down the stairs, reaching the bottom to see Austin playing chess by himself.
“Uh, hey Austin.” He looked up from the board. His eyes landed on me and a warm smile played on his lips. I couldn’t help but smile in return before walking over to him. “I made you a sandwich.”
“Thank you.” I handed him his meal. He gladly took it and dug in. He seemed very happy by just eating. I wondered if he was happy with his girlfriend.
“Ale and my best friend Tori are upstairs. You can join us if you want.” He nodded and took a bite of his sandwich again. I headed upstairs leaving the door slightly open.
The girls were still in the kitchen laughing about who knows what. I entered the kitchen and washed the knife and cups I’ve used. I ate my sandwich and drank my juice in silence as Tori and Alejandra talked about my sister’s friends. She mentioned they were very welcoming and loved music and drawing.
“Callie?” I snapped out of my daze and looked at Ale. She stared at me for a second before shifting her gaze to something behind me. I turned around to find Austin standing by the hall. I noticed the worried look on his face and stretched out my hand for him to take.
“Come on. They won’t hurt you.” He looked at my sister and Tori before taking a step forward. He took a few more steps and grabbed my hand. I pulled him closer so he was standing beside me. “Austin, this is Victoria my best friend.”
“Hi Austin.” Tori waved at Austin. He gave her a smile and looked at me.
“Do you want something?” He shook his head. “What do you want to do?”
“Does your sister still want to play dollies?” I chuckled and looked at Alejandra.
“Ale, Austin wants to play dollies.” Her eyes lit up and she jumped off the stool, running out of the kitchen. “That’s a yes.”
“He’s gonna like playing dollies.” Tori chuckled and I couldn’t help but laugh with her.
Alejandra came back later with a few dolls and we all went to the living room. Tori walked ahead of me and Austin. He was hesitant as he walked around the house. I would too if I was lost and didn’t remember some things about my life. I sat down on the couch and noticed that I was still holding Austin’s hand. I looked up at him. His eyes were on me like he was trying to figure out something about me. I cleared my throat to get out of this awkward situation.
“Uh, Austin you can go now.” He blinked a few times before looking away. He looked around himself before letting go off my hand.
I watched intently as my sister set the dolls on the floor and sat down. Austin did the same a few seconds later. I noticed how childish Austin looked in my father’s clothes. He managed to find a beanie stating that he didn’t like his hair. Just the night before I had stayed up ‘til late talking with him. He told me how much he missed his home even if he didn’t remember it well. He mentioned a few things about his mom. Austin was very fond of her considering the way he spoke about her. He said he loved the way she made homemade pizza and how much he loved her. He said she was very pretty but for what I’d seen in those pictures I found online, she was more than pretty.
“Girls, I’m home!” I looked up from my lap and stared at Austin. Tori jumped from the couch and grabbed his arm, dragging him out of the living room. Austin looked scared and I decided to go with him and Tori.
“Ale, Tori and I are upstairs.” My sister nodded quickly. Tori and I took Austin to the basement. Tori stayed behind while I made sure Austin got in safe. By the look on his face he was more than scared. I grabbed his hand gave it a light squeeze. “It’s going to be okay. It’s just my mom.”
“Okay.” He nodded and I let go off his hand. I headed back upstairs and locked the basement door. I fixed myself a bit and headed to the living room.
“Hey mom!” I tried to smile but it didn’t work. My mom gave me a confused look before speaking.
“Uh, hi Callie. What are you doing with that?” She pointed something and I looked down at my hand. I noticed I had dragged the beanie Austin was wearing with me. When did he take it off?
“Nothing. I was just looking for something.” She nodded slowly and threw the house keys on top of the coffee table. She sat down on the couch and sighed.
“Come sit here. Let’s relax.” I looked at Tori and Ale who nodded quickly while mom wasn’t looking. I slowly made my way to the couch and sat down beside her. As if on cue, her phone went off making her groan. She sat up and answered it. “Yes?”
“Weird.” I sent a glare toward Ale. She shrugged and watched mom.
“I’ll be there.” Mom pulled the phone away from her ear and stood up. She grabbed her keys and bag. “I have to go again. Feed your sister Callie!”
“Sure.” She kissed our foreheads and said goodbye to Tori. Just as she walked out I threw the beanie at Tori and she threw it back at me. I held it for a while until I heard the door shut.
Sigh.
