"Really? To Neverland?" I asked, in amazement. Peter nodded and lightly kissed me again.
"You'll love it, Wendy. It's just like your stories - and even better!" he told me, grinning hugely.
"I don't know... I can't leave John and Michael alone for too long..." I reminded him.
"They can come with, of course! Now, come on! Let's go!" Peter took my hands in his and we flew downstairs and found John and Michael. Peter relayed the plan to them and they both shouted in excitement. We took off out the front door and into the night sky. We seemed to be going further and further up and I wondered how far we were going to go.
"Peter...how do we get to Neverland?" John asked, just about reading my thoughts.
"Oh, it's easy! We just head East, toward the second star on the right!" So we followed Peter and as we got closer to the star, we realized it wasn't a star at all, but an entirely new place. It definitely wasn't as far as it looked. I imagined there must have been some sort of magic involved. We sped up as we got closer and soon found ourselves enveloped in thick clouds.
As luck would have it, I got separated from the group. I could hear Michael and John laughing, but there was no way of knowing from which direction. Peter was calling out my name and I called back.
"Peter?! Peter, I'm over here! I'm going to find land! I'm headed straight down!" I called out to him. I didn't get a response.
When the clouds finally cleared I found that I was a lot closer to the ground than I thought. I landed by a small pool of glistening water and looked up, hoping to see my brothers and Peter. They were nowhere in sight. I sighed and sat down, pondering my options. I could fly back up into the clouds and hope to bump into Peter and the boys, but it was so hard to see. I could wander into the jungle behind me, but I didn't know where I would end up. Or I could just sit and wait and hope Peter would come find me. Before I could decide, however, a voice spoke from in the middle of the pool.
"Are you lost, m'lady?" I looked up and across the water. A man was swimming in the center of the pool.
"I am... do you know Peter? Peter Pan?" I asked him.
"Oh, Peter. I know him. I know where he lives. I could show you..." he told me. His voice was like silk. I was instantly drawn to him.
"Yes! That would be amazing!" I replied. He smiled and dove under the water toward me. As he went under, a shape formed from behind him. A fish tail! He was a merman! I'd told stories of Peter and the merpeople before. Specifically of him and one beautiful mermaid... But I wasn't going to think about that now. There was no need to be jealous of a story I'd made up.
"How do you know Peter?" I jumped as the merman popped his head out of the water and spoke.
"We're...good friends. He visits me and my brothers quite often," I responded. The merman nodded and hummed. I felt myself being drawn to him. Like I had to get closer. He really was beautiful.
"How good of friends are you...?" He asked and I could tell what he was implying. I thought for a moment. We weren't, like, dating or anything. We'd only kissed a couple times. We really were just friends...
"Just friends," I told him, smiling.
"Will you come closer? I want to see you closer," he whispered. I did as I was told until I was face to face with him. I sat on the water's edge and he lied in the water, his tail slowing moving back and forth in the deeper water. He smiled and his eyes flicked from my lips to my eyes.
"Is this close enough?" I asked him, finding myself wondering what it'd be like to kiss a merman.
"Do you want to swim with me?" He asked, reaching out for me. I nodded and took his hand and let him lead me into the water. It was warm and felt nice. He felt nice, too. He was smiling and humming to himself as he led me deeper into the water. When I wasn't able to touch anymore, he wrapped his tail around my legs to support me. It felt solid and smooth, and definitely not as slimy as I thought it would be, being fish scales and all. I found myself wrapping my arms around my neck to stay balanced as he took me to the middle of the lake. His hands gently caressed my back and I was suddenly all too aware of the thin white nightgown I was wearing. The merman noticed as I looked down to see how exposed I was.
"Don't be embarrassed, lovely. You're beautiful. It's sexy..." he whispered into my ear. His hot breath made me shiver. As he finished speaking, he slowly moved his head along mine until our lips met. They were warm against mine. His mouth moved down my neck and lower still. His tongue felt like it was on my skin, the sheer fabric of my nightgown doing nothing to lessen the feeling. I felt his tail wrap around my legs tighter, his fins parting my legs. His mouth moved back up to mine. I was engulfed.
"You know, merpeople have no need for clothing..." he suggested, his fingers fiddling with my straps. I kissed him again in compliance. It was magic. He smiled against my lips and started pulling off my nightgown. As he did, we started to go underwater. I didn't mind. All I could think about was him. His body wrapped around mine, his hands caressing me, his mouth on mine...
"WENDY!" The shout was muffled from under the water, but it was enough to make me freeze. Wait. I couldn't breathe. I was breathing in water. I was underwater. I started struggling, but was held down by a huge force. I tried to yell for help, but swallowed water instead. He was drowning me. He lured me into the water to die. I felt helpless.
"Wendy!" Before I knew it I was being pulled from the merman's grasp. "Wendy! Are you okay?"
When I opened my eyes, Peter was above me. I was lying in the sand by the water. I started cough...and cry. Peter looked at me with concern.
"Sssh, it's going to be okay. Just breathe..." he whispered, gently pushing my hair out of my face. I sat up and crawled into his lap.
"Peter..." I closed my eyes as he wrapped his arms around me.
"Wendy, you know how dangerous merpeople are..." he scolded me. I nodded against his chest.
"I'm so sorry, Peter." I didn't know if I was apologizing for putting myself in danger or kissing someone else.
"All is forgiven, my bird."
