Chapter 6

Avery's POV

The last couple of days I went out with Matt a lot. I didn't want to, but I just did. I even tried to tell him about my cancer, but I failed every time. I was too scared even if I shouldn't be. How would he react if I tell him that I have leukemia?

Would he cry like Amy and Linda? Would he ignore me like Ryan did for a couple of weeks? Or will he do everything to make me feel good like Charlotte and her parents did? I didn't know.

There was just one way to get out of it. I should ignore him. And that's what I did. We both need to go one with our lives. I need to forget him. "Avery, are you ready?" Cora asked me, running a hand through hair messy blonde hair.

I nodded. "I am." We walked over to the car. A suitcase was already in the trunk. I would get my chemo tomorrow and needed to be at the hospital now.

It was cold today. I hugged myself what made Cora look at me with a weird look on her face. "Get into the car, I forgot my wallet in the house." Cora told me. I nodded, hopping into the car.

I checked my messages and again, Matt was texting me none stop.

Matthew: is everything okay?

Matthew: have I done anything wrong?

Matthew: why are you ignoring me?

I didn't want to reply to him. I need to ignore him. I then checked one of the messages Charlie wrote me.

Charlie: I'm coming to visit you after school. miss ya xx

Avery: miss you too xx

Then Cora opened the door to the driver seat. She got in, turned the engine on, and drove to my favorite place ever. The hospital. *Note the sarcasm*

When we arrived there, we quickly checked into my room. Cora was talking to some nurses while I was unpacking. I had a single room, which I liked better. Sharing a hospital room with someone is just horrible. I took out my "good luck" bear, placing it on the bed. Then I changed into some comfortable clothes and settled in, in my room.

Cora and a nurse entered the room. The nurse smiled wide at me. "You must be Avery," the nurse walked over to me. "I am Cassie, your nurse."

"What's up, Cassie?" I asked, switching through the TV channels.

"Well, I just needed to check on you for tomorrow. So, let's do it." She said. I nodded and let her check on me. When we were done she smiled. "You look ready for tomorrow." Cassie told me, exiting the room.

Cora, who was sitting on a chair the whole time, sighed in relief. "I thought she would never go. Gosh, she was annoying."

I giggled. "Anyway, I am tired." I yawned and stretched a bit. Then I went under the covers.

"Don't you want to explore the hospital for a bit?" Cora asked, acting like I was here for the first time.

"I already was here plenty of times, I don't need to 'explore the hospital'" It was the truth. Why would I even think about it?

"Alright then, sleep. Charlotte will come over after school and Ryan after football practice." Cora informed me. I nodded and got ready for a nap.

Matthew's POV

It sucked. Avery was ignoring me for no reason. I don't even know what I did wrong, or if I did anything wrong. I am even trying to fix it somehow, but she seems to ignore all my messages.

Jacob and Brady were both messing around on our lunch table. I ignored them and just thought. I thought about Avery and what I could have done wrong. I can't have done anything wro- I glared at Brady who was laughing his ass off. He threw his food at me. I wiped the food away from my face with a napkin.

"Why did you do that?" I hissed.

"Just because."

"So, what's up? You have been quiet for a few days now." Jacob asked, stuffing a french frie in his mouth.

I shrugged my shoulders. "I just...Avery is ignoring me for some reason. Everything seemed fine between us but then she decided to ignore me."

"Maybe you should talk to her. You know, go to her house." Brady suggested.

Maybe I should do that. But what if she doesn't want to see me? Then I fucked it up. Or I'll ask Ryan today at football practice. That's an even better idea.

"Avery is friends with Charlotte, right?" Jacob asked, running a hand through his brown hair. I nodded. "Well, if everything is back alright with Avery, do you think you could hook me and Charlotte up?"

I wiggled my eyebrows at him. "Do you have a crush on Charlotte?"

Brady whistled, making Jacob turn red. "I don't have a crush on anyone."

When I was about to say something, someone cut us off. "Crush on who?" Megan sat down next to me, starting to eat her food.

"Jacob has a crush on Charlotte." Brady said. Jacob hit the back of his head, cursing under his breath.

"Oh, I totally ship you guys! You would definitely make a cute couple."

"Oh, but Matt has a crush on someone too. On Charlotte's friend, Avery." This time it was my turn to kick Brady from under the table.

"Aw that's so cute. I don't really know her, but she seems nice to me." Megan is the only girl in our little group. Bianca joins us sometimes because of Megan. The both of them are friends. But I don't like Bianca. So does the rest. She seems fake to me. And she is really annoying too.

"Yeah well, she is ignoring me." I told Megan.

Megan stopped eating. "What did you do?"

I looked wide eyed at her. Why does she think I did something wrong? "I haven't done anything. She just ignores me."

"Well, you should apologize for whatever you did."

It was finally football practice. I changed into my football clothes then jogged out to the football field. Ryan was talking to our coach. I waited for him to finish talking to him, then I ran over to Ryan. Ryan and I don't really talk to each other. But I think we are okay.

"Hey Ryan."

Ryan seemed surprised that I was talking to him. "Oh hey Matt. What's up?" he asked while doing some exercises.

"Well, you live with Avery, right?" I asked. Ryan nodded. "Do you maybe know why she is ignoring me? I don't want to sound clingy or something like that, I was just wondering if you knew?"

Ryan stopped doing his exercises. "Matt, it's not my place to tell you what is going on in her- our lives. But I can ask her why she is ignoring you, if you want?" Ryan offered.

What the hell is going on in their lives? is Avery okay? Different thoughts were running through my mind. Ryan was waiting for my answer. I nodded. "Yeah, that'd be cool." I said.

Ryan smiled at me and I smiled back. I can't wait to hear her reply.
