It started to rain viciously after we arrived at the hospital. Marcus sent me worried glances when we were drenched in the rain but he managed not to talk to me. Shivering, I went to the register.
“What can I do for you miss?” The nurse on the chair said. She eyed Marcus and sent him a flirtatious wink.
“I-I’m looking for Maximus Saunders.” I was a little glad that my voice came out not as shivering as I felt.
“Please wait a moment.” She stopped eyeing Marcus then she faced the computer. I peeked a little on the side. Marcus looked at me like he was about to say something but he was cut off by the nurse.
“He’s on the second floor miss. Room 2984.” The nurse said then she gave Marcus one last wink.
I headed to where the elevator was. Damn it was freaking cold. I always hated hospitals. They felt lonely and sad.
“Stop following me Marcus.” I said, my voice flat and cold. I didn’t care.
He looked at me, anger visible in his eyes. Like I was the one that did something wrong. I looked closely and saw something more than anger in those eyes. Something I can only name as hurt. I didn’t care. At least I think.
Marcus ignored me and went inside the elevator. I hate this guy’s guts. I shifted my feet feeling the heavy atmosphere around us. I could smell medicine from here.
“Drei, please let me explain.” Marcus said almost pleading.
“Marcus stop it! I don’t have time for this bullshit.” I said. As if on cue the elevator door opened and I marched right out. Not wanting to look at the pair of brown eyes that stole my breath away. I looked for the room number 2984.
I read the number plate on the door. Stopping at the door that had a number plate of 2981. It must be this way. I turned right not even caring if Marcus followed. I stopped in front of Grandpa Max’s room. I pushed it and tears started to sting behind my eyes. I saw Mike lying on the window seat restless.
The room was painted with Fading Caribbean Blue that had cream stripes. There was the window seat that Mike was lying on, 1 meter to the right from Grandpa’s hospital bed, nearer to the bed was the wirings and monitor that indicated Grandpa’s vital signs. To the bed’s left was a small drawer with a brown ancient looking lantern on top of it. Farther to the left was the restroom. Grandpa was sleeping soundly. I sighed in temporary relief.
“Mike?” I said my voice betraying the tears behind my eyes.
He moved his gaze from the wall then to me. He smiled sadly then it quickly faded when his gaze fell on the person behind me. I didn’t look because I knew it’s Marcus.
