The boy who talks before he thinks

To the boy who talks before he thinks,

The harsh words come in contact with your fragile heart. Dear boy, have you not heard yet? Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you. Perhaps your ears fooled you, for at the age of six; those words stung you like an angry bee.

And as you grew older, and a little wiser, those ears of yours fooled you once again, for at the age of thirteen, those words from a fellow student calling you gay struck you like lightning

As if this was not enough, and is it ever enough?

You developed feelings for a girl who liked to walk the lonely roads on a Saturday night. Dear boy, have you not heard that sticks and stones may break your bones but love will never hurt you? However, at the age of fifteen, those words of rejection shattered your heart.

So now you're in class, on a Monday morning, and your teachers scolds you for the laughter that did not erupt from your lips, and you sit there and ponder. For a second, a thought comes to mind, perhaps it would be best to keep your lips sealed shut. But you look around, seeing those judging, rolling eyes, and you think against it. For you have waited too long, waited your whole life for words that never came. So you stand up, all eyes on you, and you shout and scream those words that have taunted you late at night.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.

Silence envelopes the students in the room, but then they all start to laugh.

Perhaps your ears fooled you, for at the age of sixteen, those words killed you.

Dear boy, I know you've heard because when they ask you later, when you're old, about those words. And when you hear the teachers telling your kids to think before you speak, all you can do is laugh.

You'll tell your kids that at the age of six, you learned that words do hurt. And at the age of sixteen, you learned that taking those words in silence does no good either.

So when they ask for advice, you'll say, "Tell them to think and see if they think with their mouths instead."
