Friday morning, another slow day at work. I drummed my pen against the side of the keyboard in front of me as I watched the clock.

"Excuse me miss," I heard a voice to my left, "Where should I put these?"

I turned my attention to the delivery man over the reception desk, he held an amazing large flower bouquet of roses.

"Oh um.." I stood up at once, moving a few files and business card holders from the top of the counter over my desk, "You can just leave them here, may I ask who they're for? I can let them know so she can pick them up, or I can take them to her office."

"I was told to deliver them to this desk to a Ms. (YourLastName)" the man smiled.

"What?" I asked in disbelief, "There must be some mistake."

"Not at all." The man smiled, "Have a good day Miss."

I glanced around the office as the man walked out, surely this must be a prank. I turned the large vase around, finding a small card between the flowers.

I know these aren't as beautiful as you, but I hope they at least make you smile. Meet me on the balcony at 8
-J

'J?' I thought. "James?"

I pulled on the straps of my black dress as I looked at my reflection in my full length mirror. I glanced at the roses on my nightstand as my nerves crept up on me.
I held the card in my fingers as I read his note for the hundredth time.

■■■

I hesitated as I stood in front of his hotel door, I lightly knocked twice. The door opened sightly at my knock. I pushed it open and peeked inside.

"James?" I asked the empty room, I let myself in, closing the door behind me.
My heels clicked against the tile floor in the dimly lit room.

I recognized his figure through the white curtains of the balcony, I separated the thin fabric with my right hand and let myself through, he stood with his back towards me, his elbows resting on the metal of the balcony as he looked over the city.
He wore regular jeans and a light sweater -I was definitely overdressed.

"James?" I asked hesitantly as I covered my stomach with my small purse.

He turned his head at once, "Y/n?" He asked, turning completely to face me, "Wha- What are you doing here?"

"You..." I paused- I wanted to run, "You didn't send the flowers, did you."

"Flowers?" He asked.

"You didn't ask to meet me here.." I finished, "Um.. I'm sorry." I walked back a few steps, "My mistake, I should actually get going." I shook my head and turned to leave.

I felt a hand on my elbow, "Wait." James said, "Don't leave."

"This is so embarrassing." I avoided his eyes.

"Don't be, it's alright." He chuckled.

"No, it's very embarrassing. If you'd be kind enough to let me borrow your balcony, I'd like to jump off it now." I pointed in the direction of the balcony and let out a dry chuckle.

"Please don't." He laughed, "And about the flowers...?"

"They came with this." I pulled out the note from my purse and handed it to him.

James took the small note in his right hand and gave it a read.

"Oliver." James flicked the note in his hands.

"Why would Oliver..?" I asked.

"I guess this is his way of telling me to hurry up." James said.

"What are you talking about?" I asked him, finally getting over my embarrassment.

"I've been wanting to ask you out for some time now." James admitted, "I've just been too nervous."

"Nervous? You?" I raised an eyebrow, "About what?"

"I didn't want you to reject me." He met my eyes.

"I wouldn't reject you." I said, how could he even think that.

My stomach did a flip as I realized how close he was, I felt a rush as his lips brushed mine.
His phone beeped once, We ignored it as he kissed me softly. Then it beeped again and once more.

He groaned as he pulled away, taking his phone out of his pocket.

"Oliver." James said showing me the screen.

You're welcome

"Oh wow." I laughed.

"I don't know if I should punch him or thank him." James smiled.

"Thank him." I smiled, placing my hand behind his neck and pulling him in for a kiss, "Then punch him."
