"Rosa's running for president." Emilee scrutinized her lap like it was the most interesting thing in the world instead of facing Alexa and me. Her shoulder length brown hair covered bits of her face but there was a fire in her eyes that couldn't be missed.
"What?!" I leaned forward in my desk, "are you sure??"
"... yeah. I saw one of her posters when I walked into the school today," Emilee's fists clenched and her lips tightened.
Rosa Huss: She's beauty. She's grace. She'll run against you in your senior presidential elections and probably win because she's smart and pretty and everyone likes her or is intimidated by her so you better give up while you can. Or something like that.
She's also Will Taylor's girlfriend.
"That motherfucking bitch," Alexa muttered under her breath.
"No," Emilee stopped Alexa from ranting, "she's not a bitch. She just wants to be president like me," Emilee's soft and relatively quiet voice was suddenly overcome with force, "but if she wants to go up against me then she better bring her 'A' game."
An excited smile crept onto Alexa's face, "there's the Emilee we know."
"We'll do anything you need," I added.
"First things first, I want to win fair and square," Emilee shot Alexa a knowing glance. Truth be told, Alexa was probably already planning some nefarious way to beat Rosa into oblivion. "Second thing second, I want to win."
"Um," I laughed, "those are pretty vague rules but whatevs."
Alexa whipped out her phone and started making notes, "I can probably get the softball girls on your side as long as you can get us the main baseball field or fix up the old one in the back." Alexa was constantly complaining about how her softball team never got to play on the nice new field that was recently installed. Her team had to play on the old one that always flooded and was never taken care of properly.
"Alright," Emilee nodded, "I'm not sure how I'll get a look into the school funds but I can probably get the baseball coach to agree to sharing it."
"I'll look into it! Don't know how, but I'll figure it out," I gave them a mischievous smile. Emilee didn't seem too keen but Alexa just looked excited.
"Yeah girl! We'll be like the secret service!"
"I don't think that's what the secret service does, but woo!" I high-fived Alexa. Maybe Emilee had a chance! She was a perfect candidate, no doubt about it, but sometimes high school students don't care about the perfect candidate, they just circle the name they're most familiar with. "We really have to get your name out there though. Everyone knows Rosa, so we have to make you just as well known."
"Okay," Em sighed.
"What if you make some funny posters?" Alexa suggested as the bell rang, "like different ones that appeal to different groups of people, you know?"
We started to walk out of the room when the homeroom teacher called me, "Lilah! Can you come here for a second?" I waved to my friends, telling them to go on without me, and walked over to Mrs. Keller.
"Yeah?" I asked the middle aged woman. She wasn't liked by a lot of the students because she was kind of a hard ass but it was refreshing having a teacher that didn't take any shit from the more rowdy students.
The beaded strings that held her glasses swayed as she pulled out a piece of paper. "The senior tutor positions have been opened up and I suggest you apply. You're one of my brightest math students and I think you'd make a wonderful tutor."
I smiled at her compliment. I didn't really want to be a tutor but it would definitely look good on my National Honors Society application which then in turn would look good on college applications which THEN could help me receive more scholarships.
Makin' mooooney!
"Sure!"
Mrs. Keller handed me the paper which I quickly signed and handed back to her. "Great. There's a meeting tomorrow morning before school where you'll receive your schedule and the student you'll tutor. If for any reason you don't think you'll be able to do it then just let me know."
I finally left homeroom and was on my way to first period when I saw a group crowding around a couple people. I was compelled to ignore it but my heart started to race when I heard a very distinct voice.
"I don't like the way you're talking to us!" Alexa spoke just below a yell.
My feet carried me to see a sight that screamed political suicide. Alexa and Emilee faced off against Rosa and her friend in a battle that didn't look like it would end any time soon.
"Don't make an idiot of yourself. She didn't even say anything to you," Rosa's friend said.
"Well I don't like the way you looked at us!" Alexa put her hands on her hips and leaned towards Rosa.
Oh hell to the no!
I know what that stance meant! "Alexa!" I hissed, getting her attention, "don't you dare!"
"Lilah! You don't know what she did, just stay back."
"Yeah, Lilah, stay back," a voice said from behind me. I turned to see Will Taylor moving over towards his girlfriend.
OH HELL TO THE MOTHERFUCKING NO!
I stepped forward.
Alexa vs Rosa's friend
Emilee vs Rosa
Me vs Will
It's on.
