Grandma hummed quietly as she tucked us into bed Ellie giggling as she pulled my braid making me yelp.
"Girls that's quite enough. It's time to sleep, you pups need to rest."
"Oh Grandma tell us the story again!" Ellie cried hugging her stuffed wolf tightly to her chest.
"All right." She settled on the edge of the bed smoothing out her nightgown before she started speaking. "Long ago before the moon goddess gave us our wolves she had her other children. Creatures of darkness that were rebellious and reckless. They were responsible for taking souls into the afterlife with the Moon Goddess or to the pit with her brother Morte the god of death. They would take the souls as they pleased sending evil souls to the Goddess and pure souls to Morte. Angered by her children she banished them to the pit with Morte to forever do his bidding never to touch a pure soul again. These children were called the Reapers, and when they found that their mother had given the gift of the wolf to mortals they were angered beyond belief and swore to exact revenge on their newfound siblings for having their mother's favor. A prophetess of the goddess long ago foretold of a Luna that would bring peace to the realms of the Goddess's children. 'The moon's light will shine upon her, leader fearless and true, Destined to death for peace to reign true, darkness and light, death and life.' One day a Luna of a pack will lead and bring peace between the goddess's children, but not without a fight."
"The reapers sound scary." I whisper, the blanket covering half of my face and grandma smiles at me gently.
"You should be scared of them dear. Should you ever meet one you will know, they reek of death. Their eyes are an unearthly black. If you ever meet one run as far as you can my little wolf." I nodded my head, my 6 year old brain running rampant with images of black eyes that would haunt me for years.
Looking back I wish I could have listened to her. I wish I could have run as far as I could, but I didn't. His eyes lured me in, his voice velvet in my ears, his hands around me like a vice, his soul calling to mine like a siren song. Unforgettable, and completely undeniable.
