Laura Walker is a 18 year old girl who was a senior at Copper Canyon High. She just got accepted into Harvard University with half of a scholarship and a goal of becoming a marine biologist and a professional photographer for weddings and. Other special events. She raised up to 59,000 dollars with birthday money, Christmas cards, and her job at Starbucks. She has 3 months until she goes off to Harvard and she already has her bags packed and ready to go. Her mother, Diana, called her downstairs saying "Laura, honey. Come down to supper. Me and your father have something to discuss with you."
"I'll be right down. Just give me a sec," said Laura.Putting away her favorite picture of her and her boyfriend, Jake, at the beach in Santa Monica, California with the sunset glowing to where it looked fake almost. She paused for a moment thinking she forgot to pack something and she finally remembered that she had to pack her senior portrait.
Two minutes later, she walked down the stairs in her favorite lazy t-shirt, her blue jeans, and her flip flops. Diana and her husband, Trevor, were getting the table set and Laura's favorite meal. Menudo with garlic bread and a side of chips and salsa. Laura was completely astonished. She had this weird feeling that she was about to be given bad news.
She sat down and started texting her boyfriend Jake that she was about to eat dinner and that she would text him back in an hour or two. She replied back with an ' okay, love you.' She replied 'love you too.'
After an hour of eating and having a conversation with her father. Her mother interrupted and said, "Laura. There's something that your father and I need to discuss with you."
"Yeah. What's up?"
"Um. I don't know how to say this.. We know that you're going to be going away to college soon,"
"Yes and I'm so excited. I can't wait to experience Harvard."
"I know, but something has happened."
"What happened?"
"Babe. Help me out here."
Trevor stepped in and sighed. "Honey. I'm so sorry to tell you this. We were 40,000 for the payment of the house and we had cut into your college savings."
Laura's heart started pounding and she felt light headed.
Her father continued, "I know that you were saving up but if we didn't pay up then we would lose the house and be out on the streets. With me getting laid off at work and her mother busting her ass off at work to pay our insurance bill we had to act fast. But look at the bright side. You can go to a community college near home."
Laura exploded with anger, "THEN WHAT IS THE POINT OF ME BUSTING MY BUTT AND GETTING STRAIGHT A'S FOR A FREAKING COMMUNITY COLLEGE?!?! I worked really hard to get into that school and you want me to just throw that away? You literally just ruined my future! I hate you!!!!"Laura ran upstairs to her room with tears rushing down her eyes. As soon as she reach her room she closed the door behind her and locked the door. She didn't have a backup plan. She didn't know what else to do. She picked up her phone and called her best friend, Alyssa. She called 4 times until she picked up.
Alyssa answer "hello?"
Laura replied "Alyssa my parents just messed up my whole life and what I worked for!"
"Hold on. Calm down. What happened?"
"They just took almost all of my college savings and invested it into the house. All the hard work I put into school. Gone!"
"Oh my, God. I'm so sorry. How are you gonna become a professional photographer and take my pictures?"
"I'm serious. Harvard was all I ever wanted since I was in the 5th grade."
"I can help you with your fund to college."
"No. I don't wanna take any of your money."
"Not my money. I have this job."
"What kind of job?"
"I'll tell you about it tomorrow. Come over to my place tomorrow at 4:30 and we'll talk about it."
"Okay. See you then."
