Everyone says that the breed of your dog doesn't matter. It does to some extent. Certain breeds of dogs can get certain personalities where as others can't.

For a first puppy, get a dog that has the personality "sharp as a tack" or one along the lines of being smart. This will make your dog easier to train, even if he/she isn't the fastest in competitions.

This first dog will get you enough money to buy another dog or a cat you want.

Frenchies, Shetland Sheepdogs, and  Goldies are a few smarter breeds. They'll usually be a little more expensive too.
