The rambunctious banging sounds coming from the apartment door caused sixteen-year-old - soon to be seventeen - Cali Wright to awaken indignantly from her nap she had taken on the leather sofa which was located in the middle of the room. It had been a long and taxing day for Cali as she spent six long and horrific hours in school, and afterwards having to spend an hour in detention for something that she didn't do.
"WHHAATTT!!!" Cali screamed in bursts of fire as she opened the front door. It was easily noticeable that Cali was furious as she saw that there was no one there. Little kids and the annoying games, Cali though for a moment as she was ready to shut the door. Cali suddenly noticed before she shut the door that there was a small, crumpled piece of paper on the muddy looking door mat. It was a letter. Who left this, thought Cali as she hastily picked up the letter that looked like it was from the 18th century.
"What have you got there honey?" asked Cali's mother, Sarah Wright, as she hurried downstairs to check on the dinner that was cooking in the oven. "Nothing" Cali responded to her mother as if she didn't want her to know about the letter.
"Okay honey, is that you off school for the summer holidays?"
"Yeah, mum" Cali replied. "Can I go out tomorrow night with Pete and Freya?"
"Where to?"
Cali was planning to go to a party, but she knew that if she had told her mum that then she would not be allowed to go.
"Em, probably Pete's house, I might even stay over if that's okay." Cali said with a shaky voice. Cali didn't often lie to her mother because it often made her feel guilty.
"Okay I'll call Sharon to see if it's okay if you can stay over"
"Noo" Cali said in a worrying voice. "Pete's mum and dad are on holiday, it's his gran that is looking after him"
"Oh, okay then honey"
Cali slowly moved back over to the black sofa and sat down. She reached for the mug on the table which was filled with water. As Cali took a sip she stretched back over to place the mug back on the table when she accidentally dropped it as her mother was staring right at her. The mug's fall was broken by the soft creamy looking rug underneath her feet.
"Damn it" moaned Cali as she bent down to pick up the mug. "Next time don't be so clumsy, that was the last thing your father bought for me before he died" Sarah bellowed as if she was going to bite Cali's head off.
After Cali's mother headed towards to kitchen, Cali abandoned the mug on the coffee table and rushed to her room which was up the old, creaky and wooden staircase, first door to the left. As Cali shut her door she felt chills running down her back as if she knew she that the letter would bring nothing but darkness.
Cali relaxed for five minutes sitting on her bed before she tore open the envelope eagerly. But before she could see what was inside there was a knock on her door.
