Jace's POV

I stood on my balcony looking out at the night sky. I couldn't sleep. I waited to hear a baby cry but then realised that the baby was gone. My baby.

I would have missed all her birthdays. Missed watching her grow up. She would have grown up without her father. Her first day of school had been and gone. Soon she'd bring home her first boyfriend and I wouldn't be there to scowl down at him. To make sure he doesn't hurt her. And if he did hurt her....

I guess I'm not one to talk. Clara didn't have a father. Sure she had her brother, Will and he did brilliantly with her. But it wasn't the same as having a father to watch over you.

Had I abused the fact that she didn't have a father to protect her? Yes, I had. But I did what I had to do. The Kingdom comes first.

Right?

I turned and looked at my bed and sighed. I could barely sleep without her. I'd roll over in the night and try to wrap my arm around her but she wouldn't be there and the truth would come crashing back down.

Everywhere I turned I expected her to be there. I missed her. Perhaps that's why I had kept Leah around for so long. I knew Leah was expecting a proposal any day now, but I just couldn't bare the idea of asking her. Sliding a ring on her finger, just like I'd done before.

The truth was I didn't like her. She was the reason for all my troubles. The day I'd turned her into a vampire was one of the worst decisions I'd ever made. She'd been obsessed with me ever since. She was the one Clara had caught me with.

I hated Leah, but I didn't really have any choice. Trust me Clara, I did it all for you.

I remembered the night I'd turned Clara. Made her one of my kind. She'd agreed to it. Let me bite her. But I remember sitting by her as she wriggled and screamed in pain. I'd wanted so bad to stop it, to take the venom out. I'd sat next to her, holding her hand the whole time. Not once leaving.

After seeing her like that I'd showered her with gifts. Made sure she was constantly in bed. I knew she hated it but even the idea of her somehow getting hurt again scared the life out of me.

Then she'd become pregnant and had little Lilly and I'd thought my world was complete.

But the whole time in the back of my mind there was a voice saying.

"Remember the deal,"

You can't keep her,"

"You made a deal,"

And finally the day had come and my world had been destroyed. The only problem was, she got me back.

She took the child.

The one I needed.

The one who had started the problem in the first place. I lived for one reason.

To give my child the life she deserved even if Clara couldn't have the life I wanted her to have.

Lilly still could.

Clara's POV

I walked up the front steps of Will's house. I remember the last time I was here. It was right after I'd left Jace. I let out a little sigh but Will didn't hear it. He was getting the shopping bags out of the car.
