I had fifteen minutes before class started. The hum of car engines surrounded me and then one by one they clicked off. I sat in my car with my bag beside me, staring at the school door where students filed in. My seat belt popped off when i pressed the button and my hand gripped the door handle of my car. I took a deep breath and pulled handle the stepping out into the cool January breeze.
No one saw me, thank God, as I walked into the hallway where students stood in their groups of friends chatting amongst each other. As per usual the “popular group” had the attention of most people. Well nothing’s changed, that's for sure. Shaking my head slightly I kept walking towards my locker and resisted covering my ears at the sound of the groups talking loudly around me.
I had almost reached the end of the hall and about to turn a corner when a bang and a scream of surprise (from more than one person) stopped me in my tracks. In turn everybody in the hallway stopped talking and looked at the popular group. Most people in or close to the group took a step back, fear clearly showing on their faces. Ryan Dawson the so called “leader” of the group was on the floor with his best friend Anthony kneeling beside him repeatedly shouting his name. Nobody made a move to help him, they just stood there frozen.
I walked back down the hall towards the group and shoved some people out of the way to get to the middle of the commotion. I dropped my bag on the floor and kneeled next to Anthony. He stopped looking at Ryan and focused his attention onto me as if his best friend wasn't having a seizure on the floor beside him. Honestly, I am the least of his concern.
“Who are you?” he asked me
“Lena” I responded without so much as sparing him a glance. He nods and looks back at Ryan, he was trying to stand up and I was struggling to keep him down. Anthony put his hand on Ryan's chest and pushed him down. I knew Anthony was probably freaking out so I placed my hands where his were and got him to turn Ryan onto his side. While we waited for it to end I tried to make conversation with Anthony to distract him.
“Has this ever happened before?” I asked him quietly trying not to let the whole school that was now gathered around us hear.
“Not that I know of, not around me anyway” he replied just as quietly. He took a shaky breath while I kept Ryan down and glanced at my watch- two minutes thirty five seconds and counting.
“We’ve been friends for years if anything was up he would have told me-”
“I need someone to get help” I shouted at everyone around us. They just stared at me.
“Now!” They kept staring at me like I was speaking a foreign language before a few people finally scurried off. You'd swear some of these people had the attention span of a fish.
Focusing my attention back to Anthony I realized he was still talking which resulted in working himself up even more.
“If anything happens to him-”
“He'll be fine, see.” I gestured towards Ryan and removed my hands from his chest to let him sit up. He looked at all the people around us, then he looked at Anthony for a second before turning to me.
“Don’t stand up for a while.” I told him as he sat up properly, leaning against the lockers behind him. He nodded with his head down and his eyes closed, presumably trying to stop an oncoming headache. He looked up at me when I stood up, his eyes squinted slightly, like the sun was in his eyes.
“Excuse me. Sorry. MOVE!”
“Suddenly the school nurse appeared and went straight to attend Ryan. I walked over to Anthony and quietly told him to explain what happened to Ryan after he can move properly and actually comprehend what was going on. I turned to leave but Ryan stopped me.
“Wait” He cleared his throat. “Who are you?”
I looked back at him. “Lena” I said simply and left the school.
