A couple of days passed by and I still hadn't texted Lena. I know that I can't linger for more then a week or she will be suspicious but my parents are out of town for a few days so even if I wanted to go out with Lena to the coffee shop, Alli cant be left alone. neither can I. we have become the guardians of each other when mom or dad aren't around. Even though she is only seven, she is very responsible when it comes to looking after me.
I walked downstairs and went into the sitting room. Alli was sitting on the floor colouring. Paper covered the floor. She seemed so content. This is what she does when it's just me in the house. Whatever the day, whatever the weather she stays inside to, as she says, keep me "company".
"Hey". She sounds almost bored when she speaks.
"Have you seen my phone?" she is usually the culprit when it goes missing.
Without looking up at me she says:
"Its in the garden."
I turned around to walk into the kitchen, cursing as I took each step. It was raining last night. before I enter the kitchen I hear her follow me. Racing out into the hall to catch up with my long strides.
"I think it's in the play house."
"It better be." She likes to play games on it. I usually don't mind her doing this but it bugged me recently. The days are getting warmer and she should be outside playing with her friends instead of in here following me like my shadow. The back door was locked. Probably to stop the dog from going out. We have only ever owned one pet in the sixteen years I have been alive and my dog is it. My parents didn't even want her but it was necessary for me.
Kyas helps me in a way that nobody else can. She is a service dog. Her purpose is to warn me when a seizure is on its way.
I get the key unlock the door and walk out into the fresh air. As soon as I step on to the grass my shoe is coated in a wave of brown. Mud. its always the thing of nightmares when a dog is involved. I close the door to stop Kyas from getting out.
I reach the play house and dig around under the cushions and bean bag chairs. Thankfully it wasn't damaged. Alli comes in to join me standing in the play house, looking around at the paintings on the walls.
"Did you find it?"
I hold up the almost dead phone so she can see it. I'm not angry at her for leaving it out here but this whole thing has posponed texting Lena.
"You need to be more careful with other peoples things." Then I walk back into the house.
Plugging the phone into the charger I see a few missed calls. All from Anthony. Ignoring them I go into "create message". this is when I freeze. I thought I could do this. I've done this before but with Lena it's different. I feel like she knows me. The real me. My mind goes blank.
Should I start with "hi" or "hey"? Will she want a long text or a short one? Up front or kind of shy? I can't decide. Pacing my room I think of the cafe. She likes hot chocolate so why not do something with that information. Starting to get frustrated I turned off my phone only to find that I turn it on a minute later.
Okay. Let's just start with "Hey Lena." I type it, slowly, carefully. everything needs to be right. I continue until finally I have half a text typed out.
Hey Lena!
Thanks for showing me the café. meet me after school on Friday outside the school gate. i promise it will be worth it. ill bring hot chocolate.
