Chapter 4: Let Her Go
Third Person Point of View
June 1, 1989
Officer Donovan was packing up his things since he had early leave off on his officer duty on this bright sunny Thursday morning. Officer Donovan was a big, African American man with a clean background even if his mother Old Versa was bullied for doing her so-called voodoo magic. He only shook his head and waves to a few passing police officers as he leaves the station to go to his old Sudan parked off to the side of the police parking lot.
“Officer Donovan, where are you going on this fine day?” calls out Sheriff Ramón who just steps out of his cop car.
Donovan turns and greets his Sheriff with a salute. “Going fishing for a catfish at May Creek because mama wanted a large one for the family get together,” Donovan tells him and holds up his fishing rod. “It’s a fine day to go fishing too, sir,” he exclaims.
Sheriff Ramón nods saying goodbye to the cop. “Well good luck fishing and be careful out there,” The sheriff warns. “Who knows what could be lurking in the woods,” he adds and the older man heads toward the police station.
Donovan glances down at his fishing rod and glance at the retreating sheriff with a confused look on his face. “Okay then.”
~~~~~
Merely a half a hour later Donovan sat on his portable outdoor chair with his police walkie-talkie along with his fishing gear. He was fishing at the dark murky May Creek and he was surprised that he was the only person at the dock.
It was colder by the water and Donovan was haven’t so much luck. “Come on I need a catfish!” Donovan exclaims and lowers the fishing rod back into the dark water.
He sits for a minute or two longer before he stands up and walks on the edge of the of water, trying to catch a glimpse of a fish in the murky water. He stops walking after he was a few feet from his fishing site. “What the hell is that?” Donovan questions when he sees what looks like to be a bundle of dark hair floating in the water. “That’s not a fish!” He says and he watches a back of a head connected to the hair floats up. The head crash against a bounder in the Creek and the body just floats in the water. “A Dead Person!” Donovan screams in fright and he rush back to his fish site to collect his walkie-talkie.
“This is debauch, what is the problem?” asks the female receptionist from the police station who answers the walkie-talkie call.
“Officer Donovan is speaking!” He yells. “I need backup at east side of May Creek. There’s a dead body in the creek and hurry!”
The female receptionist immediately single out any available officer in the station and even calls the morgue to come to identify the dead body.
“God help us,” Donovan whispers to himself as his gaze flicker towards the dead body in the creek. “God help us, please.”
Janelle Lehman drives down the back street from the hospital heading home when she sees a traffic jam and she slowly pulls her car to a stop. “Why is it so many people?” Janelle asks herself when she sees a crowd of what seems to be reporters and newscast trucks were park by the May Creek entrance. Janelle climbs out the car, leaving behind her belongings and approach the woods area following behind everyone else but she stops when she sees yellow investigation tape wrap around the hollow trees.
Her gaze flicker over to a young female reporter who was filming an announcement report. “Reporting the Fox8 news and I’m reporter Hilary Hills,” the young blonde-haired woman says gripping on to a microphone. “Reporting from May City Creek that there was a young female body found in the creek just merely two hours ago. An officer was off today and he was unfortunate in finding the body. However, just now the Sheriff of May City has said the young female is presumed to be the runaway Gwen Lehman that disappeared just two weeks ago.”
Janelle fragile body begins to shake and her eyes focus on the police that was at the edge of the creek. “That’s not Gwen!” she screams and she rush pass the police warning tape and push to get towards the creek. “That’s not my baby Gwen!” Janelle screams just as a police officer grabs Janelle by her waist and hauls her backward. “My daughter!” she cries throwing about her arms. Janelle eyes wheeled around to see a black body bag on a stretcher and two men was pulling it away from the creek.
“Janelle Lehman!” Officer Mark yells emerging from the cluster of cops. The officer that was holding her let go and went to join the others. Janelle stumbles toward the young Officer and grabs the front of his shirt with her shaky fists.
“My baby,” Janelle cries. “It’s not her, right?”
Officer Mark looks away from the grieving mother and nods his head. “I’m sorry but your daughter is dead,” he says. Janelle lets out an enraged scream and crumbles into the police arms crying. Janelle for the past two weeks tried to stay numb and coup with her daughter disappearance but know she was a mess. She never thought her baby girl would be dead.
“Can I see her face and I can tell if it’s her, please,” Janelle begs. “Please.”
The Officer grips the woman arms to shake her. “You’re at a fragile state right now and it’s no need for you to see the body because all the officers knew Gwen and identified it as her and we know it’s her so I ‘am sorry that I’m no help,” he lies through his teeth and Officer Mark lets go of Janelle. She went tumbling to the ground and screams.
“Gwen, my only baby girl has left me!”Janelle sobs and all the bystanders didn’t say or move to help the woman because they didn’t know how to comfort her.
