Chapter 1: The Last Goodbye

Date: May 15, 1989

It is barely three days until prom and I couldn't wipe away the excited grin on my face. "This is going to be the best night of my life," I exclaim to my best friend Madelyn. Who was too busy eying the tall-rich snob, Josiah Williams to pay any attention to me.

I snap my fingers in front of her face causing her to jump in the bench across from me and glance my way. "Huh?" Madelyn asks, but her eyes wouldn't linger from the football table in the courtyard.

I roll my brown eyes before I settle my attention again on my lunch tray. My name is Gwen Lehman and I've been at May High School for four years now and the food here was still terrible. I pick over my dried-out salad then moving onto a soggy apple. "I was talking about the prom," I tell Madelyn while eating a mouthful of the nasty apple. "This is disgusting," I grumble and tosses it back down on the tray.

Madelyn chuckles and twirls a lock of her golden blond hair. "Gwen, you can be happy because you have Mr. Perfect but my Mr. Perfect is making goggling eyes with the she-devil!" she exclaims and her harden golden glare was on the table across from us in the courtyard. I follow her gaze to see the popular-student body president. In simple terms, she is the rudest but our school so-called queen and her name was Trinity Rien. The prefect man for Madelyn was too busy eying Trinity see-through shirt and he was the infamous Josiah Williams.

Madelyn and I met when we were in kindergarten and been friends since but then we went to middle school together, and that is when I met my arch nemesis, Trinity Rien and Madelyn meet her long-time crush, Josiah Williams. I always used to ignore Madelyn babble about her wanting Josiah because he was a harsh, cocky boy with no manners and he has always been with Trinity. However, Madelyn got it in her head that he is going to ask her to prom even if she haven't said one word to him the entire school year.

"Josiah is no good for you and you know that Madelyn," I tell her with a shake of my head, showing my disapproval. "Last year, he got Mimi pregnant and she had to leave the school!" I exclaim. "Mimi was our friend and you saw how she fall apart when Josiah dump her! He's no good!"

"Who's bad news?" asks a deep male voice that I knew too well. A smile forms on my face as Alex Geffen sits down next to me and drape his arm around my shoulder.

"Nobody," Madelyn says and lowers her gaze back down to her tray. I sigh and glance at Alex and my smile grew. He was gorgeous in my eyes but it could be the fact he was my boyfriend. He had a chiseled chin and boyish good looks and a muscular body. However, what got me too really find Alex amazing was his light green eyes and when his short brown hair falls into them.

Alex and I grew up around each other but soon we fall in love with and he has always been my knight and shinning armor. Alex was a baseball player and he was the most easy-going guy I ever met and I was special to have him in my life.

"Josiah is bad news," I say and I reach over to grab some fries off his tray. "You are friends with him so tell her."

Alex scoffs, sliding his tray of food away from me before he cast a glance over to Madelyn. "Josiah and I are not friends even though he's the captain of the baseball team," he says and he points at a blushing Madelyn. "Josiah only messes with girls and ditch them so Madelyn beware," he tells her before turning his gaze back on me. "Happy now?"

I lean over and kiss him on his cheek. "I'm always happy when I'm with you," I whisper into his ear and I kiss him again. "Give me your food," I grumble and I reach back over to grab his burger from off his tray but he slaps my outstretched hand. "Alex—please," I whine but he slides the tray out my grasp.
