*Bexley's POV*

"Bex! Dinner's ready!" Jack calls from downstairs.

Oh yeah, it's pasta night!

Pasta night is a tradition we started, in which whoever's on cooking duty must make something consisting mainly of pasta. My favorite!

It might sound kinda lame but for two homeschooled kids, pasta night is equivalent to family game night for anyone else. Probably.

I smile, closing my laptop and getting out of my desk chair.

I start to walk towards the stairs, stretching my legs, when a rock hits my window.

Thunk.

And then another, but this time a little harder.

Thunk!

My smile widens as I yell down to Jack, "Give me 10 minutes, I'm finishing up on an assignment!" The lie comes naturally at this point. Nothing school-related takes me that long. Fortunately, Jack still hasn't picked up.

For a brother that spends basically everyday in the same house as me, he sure is slow.

As soon as the thought crosses my mind, Jack yells back, "You are the slowest 17 year old ever!" I chuckle quietly to myself.

I walk back into my room, carefully shutting and locking the door.

I cross the room, heading to my window and opening it. I stick my head out and look down, immediately spotting him.

"What are you doing in my yard?" I tease, smiling despite my attempts to contain it.

"Oh, you know, just checking out the beautiful girl that lives next door to me. You know her?"

I laugh, seeming to think before answering, "Hmm, I don't think so. You'll have to point her out to me sometime."

Kade laughs. "Can do, but that means you'll actually have to leave your house, Bex."

I scoff, shaking my head. "I've got A/C, Netflix, and a brother who's willing to do all the shopping. Why would I want to leave?"

Kade shrugs, clearly thinking his answer through. "I mean, I couldn't survive all cooped up in a house unless you have a Dairy Queen in there. If so, hell yeah I'd never leave." He's smirking up at me, humor glinting in his eyes.

"Awww, don't worry Kade, one of these days I'll leave my house so you have an excuse to act like a gentleman and buy me DQ." I joke, smirking back at him.

He shakes his head, the smirk now turning into a grin. "No way. How's your research coming, by the way?"

I shrug my shoulders. "I came across a dead end on the Walter case, meaning they were either cleared of charges or they bribed the police. I swear, those snobby rich people have never heard of 25 to life," I respond, shaking my head.

Kade chuckles. "Don't worry. if anyone can figure it out, it's the great Bexley Greer."

I blush at his words. Thank God its dark outside...

However, there's no keeping anything from Kade. He asks in an mock-incredulous tone, "Are you, Bexley Greer, blushing?!"

It's true, I blush a lot. It's not my fault, though! Kade just brings out the best in everyone, and he always knows just what to say to lift your spirits. Even when mom died, Kade was right there to console me.

I don't know what I'd do without hi-

My thoughts are interrupted by a ping! on my laptop.

We found something on the Walter case...
