Pony and Cherry kept on talking; I was walking besides Johnny. The air was cool, and everybody seemed calm, besides me. I knew what was about to happen, but I can't warn them because they wouldn't believe me and would think I'm crazy. That's the last thing I want.
Then, Marcia gasped. "Cherry, look what's coming" she said.
Everybody turned, except for me. I already knew it was Bob and Randy in their blue mustang. I heard Johnny make a small noise in his throat, and I looked up at him. His face was white, well, lighter than normal. I got a bit closer to him and thought about holding his hand, but decided against it. What if he pulls away? I'll look like a fool in front of everybody.
What am I even thinking? I should be worrying about what to do when they get here.
"What are we going to do?" Marcia sounded nervous and her voice slightly trembled.
"Stand here," Cherry spoke. "There isn't much we can do." We can go our separate ways, I thought. But I couldn't say it. I'll sound mean if I did.
"Who is it?" Two-Bit asked. "The F.B.I.?"
"No," Cherry replied," it's Randy and Bob."
"And a few other of the socially elite checkered-shirt set."
"You're boyfriends?" I could tell Johnny was scared, and I knew why. Bob and Randy were the ones that jumped him. Poor Johnny. At times like this I want to hug him so badly but I knew I had to restrain myself from doing so.
Cherry started walking again. "Maybe they won't see us. Act Normal."
"Who's acting? I'm a natural normal" Two-Bit said, grinning widely.
"Wish it was the other way around," Pony muttered. Two-Bit turned to him.
"Don't get mouthy, Ponyboy" he said.
The blue mustang passed us slowly and kept on going. Marcia sighed in relief. "That was close" she said.
Cherry, then, continued talking to Pony. I didn't pay much attention to him, since I knew what they were talking about.. Darry.
"I bet he wishes he could stick me in a home somewhere, and he'd do it, too, if Soda's let him." At that, I turned to Pony, as did Two-Bit and Johnny.
"No....," Two-Bit started," no Ponyboy, that ain't right... you got it wrong..."
"Gee", Johnny butted in softly," I thought you and Darry and Soda got along real well..."
"Well, we don't" Pony snapped. "An' you can shut your trap, Johnny Cade, 'cause we all know you ain't wanted at home, either. And you can't blame them."
Pony, no!!! Why did you just have to say that?! I turned away from them, feeling as though I should have done something to stop this. I've got to get my head out the clouds and focus on all the things that are going to happen.
Then I remembered. The blue mustang, it's coming back!
I slowly made my way over to Marcia and Cherry, letting Two-Bit, Pony, and Johnny continue on their conversation.
"You know," I softly said to Cherry," that mustang's coming back. I think y'all should walk on ahead so your boyfriend don't think we're all together and end up jumping my friends." Cherry turned to me.
"Nothing's going to happen, they left already, don't worry" she said.
"I'm serious, they'll jump my friends and I don't want that to happen" I pleaded.
"They won't, Candy, don't worry" Cherry replied. I sighed and was about to talk again, when headlights suddenly illuminated us. "Well, they spotted us." I told you so! Doesn't anybody ever listen to me!?!
