My name is Lily, and today is my birthday, I'm turning 10. Mom says I'm growing up to fast.
I missed my dad, and I can tell my mom has too. He's been gone for 2 years now, he's supposed to be back soon though. Sometime this week. He wrote a letter last month telling us that he had one more mission in Iraq to go to before he could head home.
We video chat a lot though, and chad, my little brother will be turning 5 next month. He looks just like dad, except his eyes.
He has dark brown hair and a pudgy nose, but he has bright green eyes. I, on the other hand have my moms black hair and my dads hazel eyes, with a dash of freckles over my turtle like nose.
I hear a car door shut, my eyes widen, 'Is dad here! Did he come to surprise me on my birthday!!' I think, jumping up from my place on the couch.
I skip to the window by the front door and peek out of the blinds. I see people in a uniform, like dad wears, carrying a folded flag.
"MOM!" I holler," SOMEONES HERE!" she laughs as she quickly walks into the room," I think it's dad" I say excitedly.
Her eyes widen as the doorbell rings and she smiles widely, opening the door. I hide behind her, scanning the people, no dad...
I guess today's not the day he'll be back.
Chad walks into the room and smiles at the grin looking man standing in the doorway.
He pays chad no attention, instead exchanging words with my mom, her face falls, and a single tear streaks down her cheek before she falls to the floor, sobbing.
The man kneels down, comforting my mom, I grab chads hand and pull him with me as I walk over to mom.
She grabs me and chad, holding us tightly. I start to piece together why she's crying, the men, the reason dad hasn't contacted us like he usually does every other week.
A tear slides down my cheek, and I coke to the conclusion dad won't ever be back.
