Broken

The most important thing in illness is never to lose heart. ~ Nikolai Lenin

Aurora Rhoads watched as the nurse injected the needle with a catheter attached in to Nate Thompson’s forearm. She noticed as he flinched from the pain of the needle piercing his skin. It created a tiny hole in his arm, unnoticeable to her water filled eyes.

Even though it hurt him, which in turn hurt her, she knew she had to stay strong by his side. She believed that it was a way of showing him that he couldn’t let the illness take over him. Aurora stood by him so that he could continue fighting.

It was just another day though for Aurora and Nate. They were both used to visiting the hospital for they have many times before together.

It was the same old routine. They both know that if one of them had to go into hospital, the other would always go with them. They went together to hold each other’s hands, to comfort them with words, no matter which one of them were doing the comforting.

They had a close bond and nothing could tear them apart, not even illnesses.

“It’s going to be okay Rorie. You know that, don’t you?” Nate croaked. His voice was too weak to make much sound but it was enough for Aurora to hear him without having to struggle.

She would have believed him if she didn’t know better. Aurora knew that it was only a matter of months, maybe even weeks until it was time for him to go.

“I know.” Her voice wavered unsteadily as a lump got caught in her throat. Aurora was close to tears; even Nate who was lying on a hospital bed with a nurse hovering over him could see this.

“Don’t cry Rorie, please don’t cry,” he tried to sooth her.

Instead of doing what Nate had asked her, Aurora’s well bust and a fit of tears ran down her cheeks. She tried to stop crying but once she started, she was unable to stop. She knew it wouldn’t help Nate anymore than if she weren’t to cry, but she just couldn’t stop.

“I’m sorry,” she cried out, her voice was dull and lifeless.

She didn’t want her beloved Nate to die. She didn’t want the cancer to win.

But it was winning.
