Melanie's pov
Before I could reach Mrs. Jefferson, she was joined by a group of people. *sigh*
As I approached the lady I couldn't help but notice how much of a misfit I was in this cocktail party. In my printed yellow sundress that was a few years' old, I mixed in the crowd as much as a crow in the midst of swans. Shacking my head and forcing myself to be confident, I stood near the lady, waiting for her to finish talking to the guests whom she was attending to. They seemed to be pretty posh, the guests. One of the guests, an elderly man, noticed my arrival but ignored me, nevertheless. I sighed again internally and turned my head towards the other guests, only to get so shocked that my jaw decided to drop to the floor and remain there.
A guy and a girl were standing side by side, conversing with Mrs. Jefferson. The girl was wearing almost nothing. If they were as rich as they looked, couldn't they afford a dress that had more fabric? *I mentally clutch my chest and force a deep breath* . A deep plunging neckline left nothing for the imagination and the dress ended several inches above her knees and I found it really hard to imagine her sitting anywhere, without embarrassing herself or others. But she was beautiful, I was sure, that is, if you decide to look past all the makeup literally cemented on her face that it was a surprise to me when she smiled and cracks didn't develop in all the layers that adorned her face.
"Delilah, please make your brother see reason," Mrs. Jefferson was saying in a voice that was layered with patience, but being a sharp observer, I noted a thin line of irritation icing her otherwise sweet demeanor. Oh, the boy. How in the world did I forget to mention him?
Dressed casually in a dark blue silk shirt and khaki pants, he had the aura that said, no screamed, "I am powerful. " His sharp jawline and the set of his mouth made me think that he would probably not accept whatever offer it was that Mrs. Jefferson was making and it turned out I was right.
"I can't. Mrs. Jefferson, I am sorry. But thank you for the impressive offer. But we will leave now, looks like someone wants your attention. " His velvety voice rolled through my brain, making me mentally swoon. He lowered his eyes to mine and smirked, looking me up and down, taking in the bills in my hand and sort of understanding why I looked like a rag doll in a party of important people. He then led Barbie doll, sorry, Delilah away, not waiting for Mrs. Jefferson's reply and obviously not caring about manners either.
Mrs. Jefferson turned towards me with a huff that turned into plain irritation as she took in my appearance. "Who the hell are you?"
Woah, wait. That was rude. She was a woman too, wasn't she?
"Ma'am, I am from the Yummy Tummy caterers. I have the bills for tonight's dishes right here, if you would spare a momen- "
"Oh! Shut up already. Mark, take care of the payments and tell her not to show her face here again. "
Tears welled in my eyes out of anger and humiliation. On top of all that, when Mark took out a wad of dollars without even checking the bills and almost shoved it in my face, something inside me snapped. These people may have a lot of money, but apparently that was all they were rich at. Gathering all of what was left of my dignity, I took the amount, checked with my bills and threw the rest on Mark's turned face, as he was looking in the direction of Mrs. Jefferson.
When the dollars flew around his head, he gasped and looked at me again, his eyes the size of golf balls. I may be struggling for money, but I wasn't a pauper and not even a pauper deserved this sort of treatment. I had just served them food, for god's sake.
"Thank you for giving me the right change sir," I smiled the best smile I could manage and walked out, my back straight, not caring in the least about the dozen pairs of eyes that were now probably boring into my back.
