"Your mother is dead."

My mind freezes. Blanks. Shuts down.

Dead? How can she be dead? She was perfectly fine when she left the house!

"Miss Hall?" Ginger says, causing me to look up at him. His hands squeeze mine before letting go.

"How can she be dead?" I whisper, feeling tears poking at the corner of my eyes.

"She was caught in the fire. She didn't get out in time," the blonde one says, pacing back and forth across the room. He checks his watch, which makes me wonder what time it is.

"Um, what time is it?" My voice shakes in a way I don't like, but I can't help it. From outside, I hear a rumbling.

"Almost 4 am. Cherry, I'm so sorry for your loss. You and your family have our condolences," Ginger says, standing up and walking over to where his partner stands.

His statement causes another bout of tears to come pouring out of my eyes, and they burn my face as they fall to the floor. The wind howls through the trees in my backyard, resulting in a ferocious rustling noise. The storm's a-coming.

"I- I don't have any other family." Both Ginger and Blondie freeze, stopping their whispered conversation.

"Come again?" The shorter one asks, nervously scratching his left hand with his right. Rain begins its heavy downpour, announcing the oncoming storm.

"I don't have any other family. It's just me and my mom-" My voice cuts off when I realize the ugly truth.

I'm alone.

And the storm breaks.

"I'm alone," I whisper, pulling my knees up to my chest and burying my head in them. Feeling comforting hands on my back, I lift my head just enough to see Ginger crouching in front of me.

"Cherry. We're going to help you in every way that we can. I promise." He stands up, offering me a hand, which I gladly take.

I don't trust myself on my feet right now.

Ginger leads me to the front door, only pausing a few times when I stumble over my own feet, eyes partially blinded by tears.

"Please don't leave me here. Take me with you." Whispering again. I'm incapable of speaking louder.

"Okay," Blondie says softly. "We're not going to leave you, I promise. Now, do you have a house key? So we can lock up behind us?"

I nod. "There's one hidden outside. I'll get it."

I slide my feet into my beat-up Sperry's and take my varsity jacket off its hook, sliding my arms into the sleeves, hiding my face the whole while so these strangers don't see me cry anymore.

The cool night air hits my face, along with a few raindrops, and I can't help but breathe in deeply, the action making a type of shuddering noise. Turning my face to the cloudy sky, I close my eyes, squeezing any remaining tears out of them.

"I love you, Mom," I whisper, before retrieving the house key from its hiding place.

We have a loose brick in the side of our house, so we broke it in half, cemented the back half in again, and hollowed out the front half to place our key in it. To get it out, you simply wiggle the brick with your fingers until you can pull it out.

Blondie and Ginger step outside, quietly discussing something amongst themselves. When they see me standing there, Ginger closes the door behind them while Blondie asks if I'm ready to go.

Nodding, I lock the door and put the key in my pocket next to my phone. They quickly escort me to their car, dodging the puddles forming on the ground, and I sit in the backseat.

There's no door handle back here, which I guess is to be expected. Although, I don't think I have the strength right now to run away even if I wanted to.

Outside, the storm rumbles on, flashes of lightning interspersed with claps of thunder. I close my eyes, leaning my head against the cool window. A flash of lightning strikes, so close to the car that I can see the sparks on top of the telephone pole as it hits. Instantly, a particularly loud burst of thunder shakes the car, and I can't help but flinch violently.

The storm is right on top of me, drowning me, separating me from the rest of the world.

And I am alone.
