Chapter 1 - Guard Down

Today is the first day of school. Preston and I go to the same school, Woodrow High School and Aaryan goes to Woodrow Middle School. They are across the street from each other so they share some of the same buildings like the CTE building and the football and baseball field. Because they are so close to each other Preston drives Aryan and I to school and Ireland drives Taze to an elementary school a few miles up the road. Taze is six but is just starting kindergarten because Irelan held him back.

Preston came down the stairs with his football jersey on and practice bag swung over his shoulder. Preston is one of the captains of the football team, there is one for every grade level but the senior captain have authority over all the younger captains. He takes id caption title very seriously. He is never rude to anyone unless the do something really bad to him and even then he isn't rude he is just not going to give them the time of day. He is the guy that other guys want to be and all the girls want to date. He plays Football in the fall, Basketball in the winter, and Baseball in the spring and he'll most likely get offered a scholarship in all three sports so he will probably have to choose.

"Briley, let's go we are going to be late and I'm supposed to be there early to meet up with the team" Preston yelled up the stairs.

For my outfit today I am wearing a white skater skirt with dark and light blue swirls that gave it kind of a marble look with a white sleeveless crop top and a long gold necklace. I straightened my hair and then added a few loose curls in the front to make it kind of wavy.

"I'm coming take a chill pill or maybe 8 or 9 of them and tell your meatheads that they can actually survive a few moments without you, their fearless leader".

Preston's POV

My mom told me I need to be patient with Briley. It's so frustrating I have always wanted a little sister to protect and tease and laugh with and now that I finally have one she just wants to bite my head off. I know she will come around eventually she has lived with me for almost 4 months so eventually she'll talk to me. I think I'll invite her to lunch today just her and me so there is no distractions. I just hope she'll say yes.

Briley, Aryan and I are in my 4 door toyota tacoma with me in the driver's seat and Briley in the passenger seat. Aaryan is in the middle seat in the back row.

"Can I work the aux cord?" Briley asked as she looked over at me almost like she was going to get in trouble for wanting something. I was a little bit taken back I don't think she has ever started a conversation with me before.

" umm, ya of course" i smiled and looked over at her. " How do you feel about going to lunch today? Just the two of us? you don't have to if you don't want too I just thought I'd ask" I nervously laughed I really wanted her to say yes.

Briley's POV

" How do you feel about going to lunch today? Just the two of us? you don't have to if you don't want too I just I'd ask" Preston said as he scratched his head nervously.

Why would he be nervous? I know Preston has been trying to build a close sibling bond between us and I haven't exactly made that very easy. I haven't really been very nice to any of them. Maybe I need to start opening up a little bit more. Not all at once obviously but if I want to be part of a family then I have to be nice to them and treat them like one. So starting now I am going to try and be part of the family and that means breaking my number one rule, never let your guard down.

" ya, that sounds like fun I guess. Better than cafeteria food" we both laughed at that.

"Stay chill my dude" Preston said to Aaryan as we got to school. Aaryan walked across the street but left his football bag in the truck. Preston took his and was going to put it in the football locker room.

As we walked into the school there were banners everywhere welcoming us and the student council was telling everyone to go to the gym for the first day of school orientation.

Preston and I are sophomores but because of football and how good preston is he hangs out with a lot of the seniors.

"Lets sit over here" Preston pointed to the far end of the gym. I knew he was doing it for me because he knows i don't like large crowds around me but I am trying to be part of the family and a team player so i need to put myself out there.

"No, I know you want to sit my our friends so let's go sit over there" even though i really don't want to the smile that spreads across Preston's face makes up for it.

"We really don't have to. I know you really don't want to." Preston said as he looked in my eyes with a little bit of sorrow.

" Yes we do. Come on you can sit on the end and i will sit next to ou on the very edge by the staircase" I surprised myself a little bit as I said that.

"Ok! Ya um ok! Let's go sit over there" Preston laughed as he started jumping up and down and dragging me over towards them.

As we reached his friends I almost instantly regretted my decision. They were so tall and loud.

" Hi i'm Dean" the guy sitting to Preston's right smiled and held his hand out for me to shake.

"Briley, nice to meet you" I schock his hand and he laughed.

" I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of each other her smiled. Ok well i'm not really sure what he meant by that but oh well.

The assembly went by pretty quick, after the assembly it was time for pictures, then after pictures it was time for lunch. Preston and I went to chipotle and got it to go so that we could take some to Aaryan. After we got back from lunch it was time to find our classes. Preston was in 7 out of 10 of my classes with me. That made getting through the day a little more bearable.

We picked up Aaryan then went home. Irelan was in the kitchen with Taze when we walked through the doors.

" Hey guys! Are you hungry? I'm making a grilled cheese for Taze do you want one?

"Sure" we collectively said and sat down at the counter and ate our grilled cheese.
