"He's here?" I said.
"Yes"
"Madison, I can't. He hates me and I didn't prepare myself to see him"
"Melanie... we're all just watching the game, that's all"
"Does he know that I was coming over?"
"No" she says and I shake my head.
"I'm leaving" I said and Madison grabbed my hand.
"Mel... come on. Everything is going to be okay" she said closing the door behind me.
"No, it's not. Madison please try to understand this... I literally fucked Cameron while Jake and I were talking" I said staring at her.
"Okay yea that's really bad. Especially the way you put it. But Melanie... you will hate yourself if you don't at least try again" she said walking away from me. I take a deep breath and followed her into the apartment. I hear Braeden and Jake laughing about something and when I emerge into the dining room, Jake was holding a bowl of chips and dip and walking to the living room.
"Hey Mel" Braeden said and I look over at Braeden as he opens some pizza boxes. "Made it just in time" he says putting pizza down on his plate and Madison stands beside him smiling at me. I look over into the living room and Jake was sitting down on the couch staring at me. Oh boy. "I like the tired, messy look... it looks good" Braeden says and I look back at him and he smiles.
"Thanks Brae" I said and he laughs.
"Well grab some food, a beer and let's watch the Cavs beat the shit out of the Warrior" Braeden said going into the living room.
"We been through this Braeden, Lebron got nothing on Curry. Warriors all the way" Jake said and they started laughing.
"We don't have to drink beer, I got us wine coolers" Madison said pulling out watermelon flavor and I smile at her. "Come on" she said walking into the living room and I follow her. Madison and I both sit on the opposite couch from the guys. I don't look up at Jake and I kept my eyes down pulling out my phone.
Ugh! No Mel put your phone away, he knows that you're always on your phone. I mean look at all the voicemails that you left him.
"Let's make a bet Jake" Braeden said.
"Go" Jake answers and Madison and I both look at them.
"The guys are obviously going to make it to Game Seven so whoever wins the championship, loser has to shave their head... the way the winner wants him too" Braeden says.
"Umm... Brae, no don't. I really like your hair now" Madison says and we laugh.
"Damn, your girl even knows the Cavs are going to lose" Jake says and they laugh.
"Mel, help me out" Braeden says and they look at me and Jake makes eye contact with me. Oh boy. I look down and shake my head.
"I don't know" I said quietly. Braeden turns up the volume as the game starts introducing all the starter players. Throughout the first half, Braeden and Jake were both yelling at each other and jumping out of their seats. They act like their playing. During the second half, I look over at Jake and he seems so unbothered. He seems like he's okay that he's without me. Like I'm over here miserable because I miss him and he doesn't seem to care like at all.
Jake looks over at me and he catches me staring at him. He picks up his beer and looks back at the TV. That answered my question. Jake is completely unbothered by me. Why am I doing this? Why should I care if he doesn't? He never even called me back. I felt a tear start to roll down my cheek and I hurry to wipe it and stood up. I walked down the hall to the bathroom and grabbed some toilet paper and started wiping my face.
