"What's wrong Daddy?" I asked my father, who was sat at the kitchen table. He ran his fingers through his scruffy, brown hair. He turned to face me, his eyes were bloodshot and irritated.
"Cassie, come here." My father opened his arms. I ran to him and cuddled him softly. I heared him sobbing on my shoulder. I looked up at him, and wiped his tears.
"Why are you sad Daddy?" I questioned my father once again. He sniffed and took hold of my dainty hands. He was shaking.
"Um, Mommy's gone to heaven. She's gone to live with the Angels. She want's you to take care of little Olly." My father explained to me as he began to cry even more. He hugged me tightly while he mourned.
"I promise Mommy, I'll take care of Daddy and Olly." I whispered to myself as I began to shed tears.
My mother committed suicide. She suffered with severe bipolar disorder for many years, which resulted in my brother, Olly, and I to live with our father. My mother hung herself in the upstairs bathroom. She felt hopeless, neglected, stupid. March 13th 2004. I'll never forget that day.
My name is Cassie, Cassie Lock. Short for Cassandra, but don't call me that. I lived in New York with my father, Marcus, and my eleven year old brother Olly. Short for Oliver. This was my story, my story surviving Tenth Grade, Love, and Detention.
September 4th 2010. Six years after the death of my mother. I was fifteen, and it was my first day starting Tenth Grade. I layed in my warm, comfy bed when my father walked in.
"Cassie? Get up! You're gonna be late for your first day!" My father shouted in my ear as he pulled the covers off my bed. I rubbed my eyes and glanced at my alarm clock.
"7:50am, can't I stay in bed for another hour?" I thought to myself. My thoughts were interrupted when my father threw my pillows on the floor. I sat up and yawned.
"Okay, okay! I'm up!" I shouted at my father. My father chuckled and left my room.
I grabbed a pair of skinnies, a white tank top, a pair of red Converses and a navy Hollister jacket. I quickly brushed my long, chestnut hair, rushed to the bathroom to brush my teeth, and I grabbed my bag. I ran downstairs to the fridge, grabbed an orange and slammed the door.
As I sprinted to the school bus, I tripped due to lace malfunction on my Converses. I fell to the ground while kids on the school bursted out laughing. I got up, brushed myself off and stumbled on the bus. I sat next to my best friend Lindsey, who looked me up and down.
"Lemme guess, you woke up late?" Lindsey guessed as I tied my laces.
"Yes, and now I've embarrassed myself infront of everyone!" I said as I fixed my hair. Lindsey began to giggle as the bus continued it's journey.
"So, you gonna attempt to get Detention today?" Lindsey questioned me. I looked at her and raised my eyebrows.
"Please, I don't 'attempt' to get Detention. I'm a pro, I don't even have to try." I said to Lindsey with confidence.
"Well, let's see how far that'll get you in life." Lindsey whispered under her breath. My jaw dropped and I turned towards her.
"Lindsey, Detention means nothing. Plus, stop worrying about me. It's my life, I'll live it the way I want it." I explained to her and turned to face the front.
"If all of this rebellious behaviour relates to the death of your mom, you won't get nowhere in your life." Lindsey replied in a serious tone. I rolled my eyes and gazed outside the window, forgetting everything around me.
Ten minutes later, I arrived at Radley High School. I walked to my locker and threw my books in one by one. At that moment, someone crept behind me.
"Boo!" I screamed in a high pitch tone and turned around. It was Zach. Zach Winters, also known as the class clown of Radley High. I slammed my Chemistry book against his shoulder.
"What are you doing? Trying to kill me?" I said to Zach. Zach was weak with laughter. I hit him again to get an answer.
"C'mon Cassie, lighten up!" Zach tapped his hand on my shoulder. I continued to throw my books in my locker while Zach rubbed his shoulder.
"So, you heading for Detention today?" Zach winked at me. I began to smirk.
"Oh yeah, big time. I'll be in there before you even know it." I smiled as I shut my locker. At that moment, Cherry, Lindsey and Dillon joined us.
"Cassie! Long time no see!" Cherry squealed and squeezed me tight. I bit my lip as she crushed my ribs. She let go of me and kissed Zach passionately on the lips.
Cherry Thompson. Also known as the 'Barbie Doll' of Radley High. Cherry and Zach were dating for a while. They were so not eachother's type, but something clicked between them.
I glanced at Dillon and wrapped my arms around him. Dillon felt so warm, and his scent was delightful. He pulled away and fist pumped me.
"What's up Cassie? Heading for Detention today?" Dillon asked me as he grinned at me. He seemed pretty happy to see me.
Dillon Rain. The school's hottie of Radley High. Dillon and I were a thing while back, but we broke up as my father thought he was 'bad meat'. I didn't see anything bad about Dillon, he seemed the total opposite of 'bad meat'.
"Hell yeah. Detention is like my second home." I replied. Dillon grinned at me once again. Lindsey stood beside Dillon, arms crossed, frowning.
"What's the problem now Lindsey?" I complained while I rolled my eyes at her. Dillon, Cherry and Zach focused their eyes on Lindsey.
"Can't you just be real for once? I mean, what's so good about Detention?" Lindsey said to me. She raised her eyebrow and narrowed her eyes. The others looked at eachother, feeling awkward.
"Well one, it's the only lesson where I have fun. Secondly, I'm far away from you!" I replied in a serious tone. Cherry dropped her mouth while Dillon and Zach bit their lips. Lindsey gritted her teeth and stormed off.
"What's wrong with Lindsey today? Cherry asked me, slightly confused. I sighed and replied.
"Hormones."
We smirked at eachother, which then broke out into a huge laugh. The bell rung and we began to walk to our lessons.
"What lesson do you you have now Cassie?" Dillon questioned me while we walked down the hallway.
"English, but not for long." I winked at Dillon and headed to English. I bursted through the door and sat myself down. I looked around, to find Lindsey sitting in the back. She frowned at me and started to doodle in her book. I stretched my arms and tapped my pen on the desk. For a second, everything turned silent. I continued to tap my pen.
Mrs Wentworth, my English Teacher, slammed her ruler on my desk.
"Cassie Lock! What do you think you're doing?" Mrs Wentworth asked me in a threatening tone. I looked up at her and raised my eyebrow.
"Sitting on a chair, holding a pen, talking to some grungy horse, what do you think?" I insulted her as I continued to tap my pen.
"Excuse me? What did you just call me?" Mrs Wentworth raised her voice at me. I stood up and faced her.
"I called you a grungy horse. I would call you something else, but it's too innapropriate." I faked a smile at Mrs Wentworth. Her face turned scarlet red and she slammed her ruler again on my desk, so hard that it snapped in half.
"Cassie Lock! How dare you talk to me like that! Detention, now!" Mrs Wentworth roared at me and wrote me a Dentention slip. I ripped it up as soon as she gave it to me. Mrs Wentworth gritted her teeth and started to write another one.
"There's no point. They're expecting me anyway." I said as I threw the remains of the ripped Detention slip in the air. I turned around and shouted to Lindsey.
"Don't worry Lindsey, it's all worth it." Lindsey shook her head while she smiled at me. I made my way to Detention, once again.
