Today was a very beautiful Sunday evening. Small mammals, like the squirrels and rabbits we owned, scurried out of their enclosure hungrily onto the lime green field of freshly mowed grass, still having dew drops from the early morning fog. Two squirrels raced up my families orange tree to get to the tan and black octagonal bird feeder, one nearly grabs onto the small tan ledge where the birds loved to perch and feed off of. I sit on my favorite flowerd arm chair on the patio and let out a soft laugh, watching the squirrel attempt to get the delicious sunflower seeds my mother placed in the feeder.
My backyard was small compared to the others. It was only about six acres, enclosed by a white picket fence. So I had room to run around and let loose my energy in the form of play. I usually play with a ball that's the size of a soccer ball in the backyard that's always under the orange tree, sitting in the shade. It had lots of pink flowers on it which nearly covered the whole ball. This was my favorite thing to play with, since this was my very first toy. I usually like to try and pick up the ball but I kick it purposely when I reach down to grab it, I do it intentionally, mom thinks it's funny and cute.
"Adeline!" My mother yells, carefully making sure it didn't sound too much like a scolding pitch. "Its almost dinnertime! Come help me fix up dinner!"Mom closes the glass sliding door, I watch my mom close it behind me before getting up and going in. Before I go in, I kick the ball towards the tree, it lands right to the shaded area. I turn around with a satisfied grin and head up the porch leading to the backdoor of my small house. I get a hit of cool air when I enter, the breeze hitting my sweaty face, wincing at the coldness against the skin.
"I'm in the kitchen sweetie, we're having spaghetti tonight." Mom shouted from the kitchen, I could hear glass clanking and the water flowing as mother does the dishes. After she finished washing the glass plates, I brought two of them to the round, baby blue kitchen table then placed them on the opposite ends. Mom brings over the pot full with spaghetti, my stomach rumbling like the sound of thunder due to the delicious aroma of tomato sauce on the noodles. I put a scoop full of spaghetti onto my plate, and then on my moms. My mother brings over plastic cups filled with rootbeer, my favorite kind of soda.
"Thanks mom." I say before I chow down on my food. My mother smiles at me, I look at her and smile back.
"No, thankyou for setting up the table." Mom rubs my head, digging her fingers into my hair and giving me a short massage. I begin to remember that I forgot napkins and forks, since I usually eat with my hands.
"Whoops! I forgot to get some napkins and forks. I'll get them." I get up from my chair and go to the drawer where the forks were. I grab two of them and place them at the table. I head to the living room closet to find some napkins. I grab a couple for me and my mom then head back. The kitchen was connected to the living room so I didn't have to travel far, which was pretty cool. I sat in silence for most of the time I was eating, looking down at my food. Mom finishes first. She goes to the sink and puts her plate and silverware in.
"I'll do the dishes for you mom." I speak out before she grabbed the blueberry scented dish soap and sponge. She gives me a gentle nod, followed by a smile.
"Thanks, sweetie." She walks into the living room and sits down on a brown, leather arm chair. I finish my food and put my dirtied plate and fork to the sink. I throw away the napkins and empty plastic cups into the trash bin next to the sink. I do the dishes. After I finish, I dry my hands and go to my room to watch tv. I put on the weather channel to see if there's any storms that's gonna hit Los Angeles."A Severe storm is heading toward the Los Angeles area, followed by tropical storm like winds." I giggle. I really loved storms. I wished I could shoot lightning at will from my hands when I was five.
"The storm will hit Los Angeles at twelve o'clock am, possible chance of a tornado forming due to the severity." I look at the purple on the radar, I smile menacingly, excited for the storm.
"Mom! A storms coming! I don't think I'll be able to go to school tomorrow because there is very likely a possibility of a tornado." My mom let's out a gasp of panic.
"That's not good, hopefully there's no tornado." Mom sighs, putting on the weather channel. I lay on my bed, looking up at my beige ceiling.
Hopefully my moms right. It was midnight, I couldn't sleep. The wind sounded like screams of the tortured, followed by bright flashes and loud booms of thunder. I get up from my bed and open the blinds, revealing high winds and heavy rain. Looking at the intense winds made me feel a little nervous. Every time the thunder roars, I could feel the house vibrate like a low intensity earthquake.
All of a sudden, the window in the living room broke. I turned my head to my room door, which lead to the living room. I expected my mother to come bursting through my door to check if I was ok. Mom? I questioned in my thoughts. I open my room door, everything was dark, only feint glints of the glass were visible. I walk to the room next to me, my mother's room. I open the door quickly, expecting my mom to be in there, but she wasnt. At this point, I was terrified. I checked everywhere, I couldn't find her.
"Mom?! Where are you!" I yelled out, beginning to cry in fear. I go out into the living room blindly. I step onto the glass of the broken window. The screams of the wind cover my voice. Where had my mother gone? Did she leave me here? Why would she do that? She'd never do such a thing! With those thoughts in my mind, I begin to cry. This is a nightmare Adeline... You'll wake up and be in mothers arms. Before I could recover from my discomfort, something hits me in the back of my head, knocking me out cold.
