The Night Song

Fireflies light the dark
As the moon settles in slowly
It humbly kisses soft lipped
Spirits linger lowly

The stars hunger o'er the open sky
Their craving all for naught
Some nights I dream of dreams I've had
Some nightmares through I've fought

Crickets chirps their lullabies
On winged harps they flay
With chattering katydids stroking
Their strings on which they lay

Even under the dimlit sky
Watching stars so far away
The midnight orchestrates a symphony
In which I want for play

My finger prods the limelight
It conducts in Mozart's sake
When our songs are finished up
Mister Sandman comes to take

He sprinkles dusty shadows
All along my eye
With a sorry shallow smile
The night does pass me by

I linger in my windowsill
My mind drifts off in space
But when my heart is empty
The music takes it's place
