Chapter 7: We become homeless

Freedom isn't half as nice as I thought it was. We still needed to get Aunt Elisa and Jade's little brother, Tim, out of the catacombs, along with everyone else. To add on to that, the Boss's lieutenants were hunting us, the food was stolen, and we spent our nights at stolen places or sewers. I should start from the beginning.

"We're free," I said as bright sunlight hit my eyes. I had no idea how long I'd been in the catacombs. A week? Two weeks? I threw my arms around Jade. "We're free!" I yelled.

She just stood there, blinking from the bright light, her expression forming pure joy. "We're free," she whispered. She stood staring around for a few minutes, and shook herself out of the daze.

"We're free." she repeated. "But the Boss's lieutenants will stop at nothing to get us back. We need to find all the elevators and find a way to stop them."

"That's easy enough." I said. The top of the shaft was glass, so all I needed was a hammer to break it. Anything heavy, really. "You don't happen to have a spare hammer, would you?"

Jade shook her head. She picked up a thick piece of scrap metal from a nearby trashcan. "Will this do?" she asked. I nodded. The elevator, conveniently enough, had thin metal bars criss-crossing on the glass elevator. I stepped up on a few, and was soon in the top. I bashed the glass with the metal, and began sawing at the cables.

"What are you doing?" Jade asked from five feet below me.

"Sawing the cables." I replied. "The elevator will fall down the shaft and voila, no more elevator."

"I'll help," said Jade. She swung herself up with her own piece of scrap metal and began working on another cable. I finished my first and began working on the second.

"What's the next part of the plan?" I asked.

"I can't tell you here," said Jade. "They might hear."

I frowned, thinking she was a little paranoid.

"I'm not paranoid," said Jade, cutting off here first cable. "Just cautious."

I finished mine and started working on the last one, saying nothing. Jade shrugged and sawed off her last cable just as I got mine. We heard the elevator tumble down the depths. I jumped off; worrying debris might blind me or something. Jade followed. Even from many feet up, we heard a resounding crash. I winced.

"We need to find the others," said Jade. "That's the next part. Cut off all their communication and ways to get up."

"But how are we going to get back down?" I asked.

"You'll learn when we finish our task." Jade said, smiling.

"They've escaped, sir. Out of the catacombs."

The man at the desk showed no emotion, none at all, and stayed still. He didn't need the details- he had guessed. A most clever plan, formulated by the emotion girl.

"Send out two to track them." he ordered.

"Yes, sir."

"Did anybody help them?"

"Yes, the boy who served them."

"Ah. Punish him. Electrocution, maybe."
