He soon runs to stand next to me and says "Are you ready to go? " I nod and we walk out of the school side by side. As we walk, he grabs my hand and holds it in his. I feel safe knowing he's with me. But I also get this nauseating feeling in the pit of my stomach, knowing that if we were in danger, I would have to break his heart to save his life. "Are you okay? " he asks, " You've been awfully quiet lately. " He can't know that I don't like his protective nature. "I'm fine. Just thinking about stuff. " I know he feels like my silence is his fault, but I don't know how to convince him it's not. "Are you still the smartest guy in algebra? " I ask teasingly, trying to lighten the mood. He cracks a smile. "I have to be. If not, who would be here to challenge you for valedictorian? " I smile. "Who says you're a challenge? " I say and he starts to laugh. "Oh please. I could beat you in my sleep. " he says. "In your dreams " I say and we both start laughing. If only he looked at protecting me that way.
