Waves roaring and adolescent teens was the only sound Ree could hear. Breeze kept blowing her hair into her face, and she'd swat it back out, each time becoming a bit more annoyed. She hoped the summer camp her mother had signed her up for would be fun. She set her lips into a sad smile when she thought about her home. Sure, she'd be back in merely days, but she couldn't shake the homesickness she felt on a boat with only strange teenagers and herself.

There were seventeen of them, including herself, and she still couldn't even name half of them. No one showed any interest in her except a girl named Abbey who had ended up getting sick and having to return home early. Even if Ree wanted to go home, she couldn't yet. She was hundreds of miles away from her home. She looked out of the boat once more, enjoying the view of California's coast. It was her first time visiting there and she loved it. Ree found herself growing quieter as the trip continued because she really had no reason to speak.

When Ree was done staring out into the ocean, she decided to peek into the room where the others were. She stepped gently towards the door which had a small window, and she looked through it for a moment. The other kids were all talking and laughing, showing each other videos and pictures on their phones and playing strange music that Ree didn't listen to. She began to wonder if they even noticed her absence.

Ree sighed and decided that she would just look out of the boat again, so she walked up to the rail that separated the boat from the mesmerizing blue water. This was when she saw a brightly colored fish that seemed to follow the boat. It was blue with bright pink stripes on it, and a yellowish colored eye that wasn't too uncommon for a fish to have. Ree had never seen any fish like that other than online stock photos. The fish really caught her attention and she didn't know why.

Ree was so focused on it that she didn't notice herself tipping over until she landed in the water, but no one noticed on the boat. The fish approached her as the boat left. She was oddly calm considering she was stranded in the ocean and she could never catch the boat. "Hello.." She looked at the fish, who didn't speak back.

Of course it didn't. What was she thinking, talking to a fish? Ree sighed but soon was no longer calm when she caught sight of the waves. Now breathing frantically, she began to do the freestyle stroke as fast as she possibly could, but her years on the swim team did nothing now. The wave toppled over her head and Ree knew she couldn't beat it when she saw more coming. She caught sight of the fish once again before her eyes closed and her head was under the roaring waves.

"W-What the hell..?" Ree mumbled to herself when she opened her eyes again. She was alive, and on land. Well, more of a rock. She sat up and coughed slight as she took in her surroundings. It was breathtaking. A cliff was on the side of the place, and there were several large rocks and what seemed to be a small reef underwater. The pink and blue fish was swimming in the clear pool beneath the rock. "You..?" She now knew she was losing her mind. She slid into the water almost instinctively, but this time she could touch the sand in certain areas and there weren't waves to throw her into an unforgiving death trap.

As she tread water around her, she slipped underwater and opened her eyes. It was blurry, considering humans don't have eyes adapted for seeing underwater. But after awhile her vision cleared and she realized something truly strange. She was in the water, but she could see, and breathe. "What the..?" Apparently she could also speak. She looked down to see if she had become a mermaid or something but her legs were still there and she didn't seem to have any gills.

Ree was very confused and even a bit scared now, until the pink and blue fish swam up to her. "Hello." The fish... Spoke.. Ree swallowed her fear. This felt so normal but she wasn't sure why. "Hello..? Why are you.. speaking..?" Ree struggled to find the right words. The fish seemed to smile, as much as a fish could. "You'll get it later, just don't question things yet.." Ree seemed scared. "Come on, don't be scared.. I saved your life you know.." "Y-You did..? Thank you.." Ree stuttered out, still uneasy. "Um.. What's your name..?" She attempted to make conversation. "Dear, do remember that I'm a fish. I don't have a name." "Oh.. Well I'm Ree." The fish nodded. "Lovely to meet you." "L-Likewise..." The fish swam under her hand, so she basically pet it. "I don't want to just call you 'fish'. Can't you think of any name for yourself?" Ree suggested.
