She dialed her mothers number.. she remembered it but only because it kinda sounded like the jingle from the Optimum Cable commercial. The phone rang... she played with the phone cord, twirling it between her middle and index finger.. the phone rang again... she caught a 'tude & mumbled " my grandmomma told me if they don't answer after the 3rd ring hang up." She quickly slammed the phone down..
She walked into her grandmother's room.. she wanted answers. She asked " Who was that on the phone momma?" Ms.Lavenci was so angry and pissed off... but one thing they didn't do in that house was lie... you don't lie to people you love. But that in due time changed.
Lavenci: "It was your father."
Grey: " my father? Why did he call?"
Lavenci: "does it even matter? He ain't nothing but bored in there. "
Grey took offense. Highly offended might I add myself.. I mean I am the narrator, I was there. Now what does an 8 year old lil girl know about some dang gone "OFFENSE." GREY TRÍX!!!! She felt that, that was an understatement. Why did he have to be bored in order to reach out and contact with his daughter? But why did it take so long? I know he's thought about it I mean, she was his ONLY daughter.. he had two sons! He spent so much time in there but why try to reach out now?!
But Grey also could never live without the knowledge of knowing the answer to these questions. She turned around and quietly went back to her room.. her mother walked in from a card game she had attended with her friends.. Grey gave her the news. But for some reason she was happy to say she received a call from her father! Even though she didn't get to talk to him she was happy he called.. Aviaa was happy to see that hearing from her daughters father made her daughter feel happy. She promised her they would write secret letters to Daddy. Mommy promised that she could say whatever she wanted in those letters and mail them off and granmomma would never know! G wrote until her hands gave out. All 10 little fingers and 2 hands cramped until she couldn't write any longer. Minimum 4 page letters! Front and back. There were so many questions.. especially since this hadn't been the first time Aaron reached out since he was incarcerated.. there were a house full of secrets, a draw filled with old letters. Aaron called so many times to be ignored and have a call log of disregarded regret and sorrow. Grey would later find all this out in her adult years. It hurt any way you look at it.. be careful how you let life hold you dear Reader, she is a bitch and she isn't too fond of babies.
8 Years old was the last year she receive a birthday party. Any type of celebration or recognition from her family ceased after 11 years old... Life took her innocence with that phone call. After that everything became a question. Growing up in black African American culture, if you don't pay no bills ain't no questions and a bunch of ass whippings okay! This phone call sparked a lot of questions, answered on a foundation of jealousy, hatred, malice, insecurities. All sandwiched together with a power trip... this segment is a very important part of the story my friends. This phone call ended her childhood early. Imperfections blossomed at 8 years old.
By sneaking and writing these secret magical
Letters to her father she was being taught how to lie, be sneaky. Manipulate! Going around the honest and actual truth. She didn't ask to be born but she was dealing with the cause and effects of her mother and father fooling around when they were young kids leaving her with a life that they were letting someone else raise every time they walked away. She was being taught an action that was mild and may been viewed as minor but a white lie is a lie all together. Keeping our children pure and honest is key to changing our world and helping them help more lives and help them pay it forward. But this was a young black generation of uneducated women living on Welfare. In the United States they don't teach those type of courses in our communities. They don't sing these songs.. a thief would rob an old man blind with a song & your lover says they would never do you wrong then, sing the same tune. That was their education. School of Hard Knocks... A Generation of broken women raising broken men and more broken women.
This is why it is important to keep your children pure while you have them, not very good to taint them.. life will do it for you. Nurture them and show them love, true love always wins.
