I woke up on cold, hard tile. I laid there for a minute before looking up to see I was in my bathroom. I slowly stood up, wincing when I moved my hip. It was dark, but eventually I found the light switch, turning it on. The light flickered briefly, before revealing the extremity of my situation. I gazed into my cracked mirror, seeing nothing but a gaunt face and slim body, covered in cuts and bruises. I was so disoriented that it took me several seconds to realize I was staring at my own reflection. I shifted my eyes upward, to see 4 words written in red on the mirror. Blood-red. I shook my head slightly, before turning and running out of the room. No...no...no...he can't be...
I had just built up a career for myself, with literally nothing but a camera and a love for games, but now he's coming back. He's coming to ruin it.
"No". I say this out loud. "Not again".
My hand brushed over the cuts on my left forearm. I looked down and saw not one word, but three. Two more than I remember carving. The first is the biggest though, and sticks out like a sore thumb. FREEDOM. The other two are small but deeper. As I read them, I can almost hear his voice, lower than mine, mocking me, teasing me. You wish.I walk back into the bathroom and take a freezing cold shower, easing the pain of the fresh bruises and washing away excess blood from the cuts. I think back to what I did last night, but I can't remember a thing from when I put down my phone. Wait, where is my phone? I quickly finish my shower and get dressed. I look towards my bedside drawer where I remember leaving it but it's gone. I try not to panic and decided to look for it by retracing my steps. As I step into the kitchen, I see a leaf on the floor. I frowned down at it and pick it up. The windows are closed, the doors are locked and there is no wind outside. I spotted another one, and pick that one up too. This continued until I stood by the massive oak tree in my garden. I glanced up to see my iphone firmly lodged in the uppermost branches of the tree. One might mistake it for a small bird from that height, but the fact that it was vibrating and blaring "All The Way" kind of ruled that out. Mark was calling. The tree was about 80 feet high, and I am petrified of heights. But I was not about to let a good iphone 6 go to waste. I scaled the tree carefully, not looking down, until about 50 feet up. I felt my heart almost skip a beat, and at that moment I was a very literal treehugger. I finally make it to my phone, and dislodge it from the branches and surprising, Mark is still calling. Something must be up. I take a deep breath and pick up the phone.
"Hey, Mark!" I said normally, as if I were not 70 feet high in a tree.
"Jack, oh my god, why didn't you answer? I was calling you for ages"
" Sorry Mark, you know with all the cool stuff I do sometimes I can't hear my phone ringing, you know with the adrenalin and stuff" I joked.
"What like rock climbing?"
"Haha somethin' like that...listen I have ta go I'm kind of ummm...preoccupied right now but I'll call ya back later, ok byeeeee...."
I hung up before giving him a chance to respond and quickly climbed back down through the tree, which began to shake violently. "Stop it" I said aloud. It just got worse. I rolled my eyes and jumped the last 6 feet to the ground. The sun was well up by now, so I went inside to record videos. If he keeps messing with me like this, I'm gonna lose so much time. I glanced into the bathroom as I passed, once again seeing the four words etched in blood on the mirror.Did you miss me?
