"You are invited to the wedding of Raquelle Tima and Matthew Tanner.." Vito read the invitation in his hand aloud.
It had been seven months since he had heard from Raquelle. She had kept in touch for a while after his wife, Joan had passed away and donated her healthy heart. Vito had appreciated the effort but Raquelle had a part of his wife inside her and every time he thought about the young woman it surfaced oceans of grief. He longed to wake up to the sight of Joan's warm smile, that could lift the worst of moods, once again. Vito knew it should make him happy that his wife's tragic death had saved another, but he felt only sorrow and anger. She had always told him,
"Vito, darling, you stole my heart long ago, and I have no intention of ever taking it back."
How ironic that her heart now literally belonged to another. He truly felt as if Joan wasn't with him anymore, just a crippling memory of heaven and how he would never live there again. He believed himself a selfish man and was enraged at the world for taking away his happiness. Heaven had slipped between his fingers, never to be seen again, as he lived out the rest of his sorry life in this hell. If there was an afterlife, Vito had accepted long ago that it would be impossible for them to spend it together.
He believed there was no room for him, next to his saintly Joan. She had always put other's needs above her own, but Vito had always struggled with the idea of going out of one's way to help a stranger. A close friend or a loved one, sure, but a complete stranger? Vito knew how selfish he was being and he hated himself for not being more like Joan. He had lost his passion for life, and the selflessness that Joan had inspired him with and had built up inside of him had quickly faded and been replaced with bitterness.
How unfair for Raquelle, the girl who stole the heart that belonged to him, to be happy, while he drowned in grief. Yes, he would go to the wedding. Vito told himself he was doing it for Joan, but he knew he was going for the chance of seeing Raquelle unhappy, if only for a moment.
