It was only 2:30, and I'd only been at the studio for an hour, but I had to go. I grabbed my jacket from the table, pulling it on as I slipped into my boots. My keys had been hanging by the door of the studio for a few days. I'd been making Ben and Dale drive me places, finding no need for me to take my car anywhere when we'd been in the same place for the past week.
But now I was off to one of my many jobs. And I was picking up my littler brother from school on the way. He was coming with me today. I worked at the daycare we'd been sent to as kids, and today was my day to run and pick up all of the kids.
I got to the school, which my brother was a junior at and I had graduated from a few years ago. There was still another couple minutes until school let out, and I knew Austin would hate it, so I climbed out of the car and walked in. The lady at the desk didn't even try to stop me. She just smiled and waved, like I'd never left.
This is where Nate's mom teaches, and I was tempted to go disrupt her class, but I can really see her any time that I please, so I ran up the stairs and decided to disrupt my chemistry teacher's class. He was in the middle of writing notes on the blackboard about something I hadn't really paid attention to. "Yo, Kevin," I said, leaning against the door frame.
All of the heads in the room snapped up in my direction, looking thankful for the break from writing. Mr. Collins looked over, too, smiling when he saw me. "Hey, Liz! Breaking into the school? Or did they really let you back here?"
"It was my undeniable charm and overwhelming beauty that got me back in, Mr. Collins," I joked. "I'm actually just here to get my brother. He's in English right now."
"Than why are you here?" some kid in the front asked.
"Shut up, Jordan," the girl behind him said. "You're Liz Karting, right?"
"Yeah, that's right. Do you know Austin or something?"
"No, no. It's just that, you're kind of famous." Oh, God, here it comes. All the time, people recognize me for being arrested and attempting to shoot a police officer. I didn't want to be known for that. I didn't want to be known at all. That's why I'm a band manager and not a member of the band. Well, that and my lack of musical talent. "You know All Time Low."
Okay, so that wasn't what I was expecting. I stood up straight. "Um..." I said awkwardly, not sure how to answer that. I mean, I knew All Time Low, but that wasn't the greatest memory. I was never sure how to answer questions about them. "I have to go. I wouldn't want to take away from all of your chemistry fun! See ya later!"
"Happy birthday!" Mr. Collins yelled after me. "You know, for tomorrow."
"Thanks," I smiled, then I turned around and started down the hallway.
I was almost to the library, on the way to Nate's mom's room, when somebody grabbed my arm and stopped me. "What are you doing here, Lizzie?" It was Riley, Austin's best friend. He flirted non-stop, but he was a pretty cool kid.
"I was picking up my brother, but I got here early so I'm going to see Katy," I told him, and he turned around to walk with me.
"You mean Ms. Robinson?" he asked.
"Yeah, that's exactly who I mean."
"Does Austin know you're here?"
"He knows that I'm picking him up, but he doesn't know that I'm walking around right now. Who does he have for English, anyway?"
"Ms. Robinson."
"Oh. And what class are you skipping right now?"
"English with Ms. Robinson. And I'm not skipping. I was going to guidance, but I found something much better to do with my time." He winked at me as we walked into the library.
