Chapter 3:

"Hello, granddaughter."

The woman before me was nothing like the woman I'd come to know as my grandma. First of all, my grandma was dead. She had been warm and welcoming. This woman seemed fake. Even her smile seemed feigned, yet I remembered her from a magazine, Queen of England, Victoria. To her greeting I could only muster a small, "Hi."

Her smile fell, and she motioned for me to sit down. She took a deep breath and began, "I know you must have many questions. Let me explain, I'll be sure to explain many of the questions you surely have. Firstly, you are an heir, I know this may seem confusing to you. I am Victoria, your grandmother. Let me elaborate, a couple of years after your birth, you're life was threatened. A servant woman who had recently lost her child to a fever offered to take care of you as her own. You may know her as your mother, Elizabeth. I will forever be in her debt. You're here becau-"

"What happened to my birth mother?" I interrupt. Oops. She shoots me a stern look.

"Your mother was taken," She says. She glances at me and holds her up her hand at me. "Before you ask, we do not know who took her, but we do know that it may be the same people who threatened to take you. Your father and my husband died fighting her abductors," A somber expression flits across her face, yet is gone as quick as it arrives. "Now, back to what I was going to say, you're here because you're of age to learn about your powers." My ears perk up at the sign of that.

"You mean that crazy wind thing I did at the house!" I'm definitely excited to finally get to that part. Guess I'm not so crazy after all.

"What? You're powers have arisen? No, no, this is all wrong. Are you sure?" I nod. "Damaki!" She yells, startling me. She'd been using a soft tone up until that point. A couple seconds later, Damaki comes in.

"Your Majesty," he acknowledges, and proceeds to bow. I try to suppress the urge to roll my eyes, but it's no use. Damaki catches my expression and smirks. Oblivious to our interaction, the queen interrogates, "She has used her powers in your presence?"

Damaki nods, "Yes, Your Majesty." She questions further, "What element?"

"If I am not mistaken it is Air." He glances at me and I'm sure he can see the confusion on my face.

"You are dismissed." He bows again and leaves the room. Finally she turns to me. "You are not yet 17, you should not possess an element yet. Elements are the ability to control one of Nature's core functions. Most heirs get their ability at 17 or later, some even get affinities, but that is a topic of later discussion. However, your early abilities have me a bit distraught."

She frowns obviously lost in thought. She starts to say something, then just waves the words away with her hand. "No matter, you are aware that today is Saturday, correct?" I nod, not really bothering to use my voice since she's been doing all the talking. "Well Monday you start school and Wayward Academy, a prestigious school. I've already arranged everything, you will just pick up you're schedule then. Meanwhile, Damaki is waiting outside the doors to give you a tour of the castle and introduce you to the staff."

"Um, Queen?" I start to ask. She smiles up at me, questioningly. "How do I get my clothes?"

She smiles at me, "I'll ask one of the maids to accompany you to the mall." The surprise may have been evident on my face because she laughs. "Yes, there are malls here too. Now hurry child, Damaki is waiting." Turning to leave, I think maybe this grandma isn't as bad as she initially seemed.

I walk out of the room and immediately, Damaki is there to greet me with a smile, "Hey, how'd it go?"

I shrug. "Not bad, I though she was gonna be more witch-y. Anyways, she said you'd give me a tour and introduce me to the staff?" I give him my best puppy eyes. He just laughs at my failing effort and holds his hands up in movk surrender. "Okay, okay I will!"

"There are guest bedrooms. Go ahead and look at them and chose the one you like best. The one you choose will be yours," says Damaki.

We start towards the room closest to us and I pull open the door.

"What the fuck? Ahh, my eyes!"I yell.

At the sound on my voice the two bodies that were intertwined look up. A pissed off looking blonde girl covers herself up with the thin sheet, and the guy doesn't even bother to cover himself. In fact, he looks at me with a bored expression. Arrogant jerk.

"What do you want? This rooms taken," says the arrogant male brunette, pointedly looking at Damaki who'd come up behind me. Asshole. I turn on my heel and start to leave when he calls to me, "Oh, Servant Girl, bring up dinner. My guest and I will be a bit too occupied to bless you with our presence."

I start to irascibly reply but Damaki pulls me with him and closes the door behind us.

"That little shit called me a servant!" I growl at Damaki. He tells me, "Don't worry about him. He's just some prince the Queen has allowed to live here for the moment. C'mon let's find you a room."

Heck, I am tired anyways, so I give in. "The farthest one from this room. Please," I tell him, in my girliest voice . He laughs, and leads me down the hallway.

"Here you go. Someone will come tomorrow to help you decorate it however you want it. You're welcome to take a shower though, one of the ladies will put pajamas on your bed before you come out. I'll see you tomorrow. Goodnight, princess." Damaki starts to leave, but I touch his arm and he turns back to look at me.

"Yes?" He looks at me so expectantly, I almost forget my question. Almost. "Why would I see you tomorrow."

"I'm your bodyguard." He flashes me a smile and walks out, leaving me alone to think over todays events. Why does he call me princess?
