In reality it had been a long time coming but he had hoped that something would change his mind. The flat was too empty now, Harry thinks he walks past the last of Louis' belongings packed away into boxes by the door, a steaming cup of coffee slowly burning it's way into his large hands. He was coming to pick them up today, soon it would be just Harry. He really should have told him the first day he announced his relationship with Eleanor, this thought crosses his mind. Out of anger and frustration the mug in his hands is hurled at the far wall, shattering against it. It's there he stands, the middle of his too empty flat that he realizes how badly he's screwed up.
Not a moment later there's the three sharp taps on the front door. 'Speak of the devil' his thoughts spit. But his anger immediately melts when he opens the door to reveal those brilliant blue eyes.
"Don't you have your key?" It comes out bitter, much more bitter than he had meant it to be.
Louis hesitates brushing his palms against his jeans, drying them from sweat; an act of nerve, harry recognizes. He then digs his had in his pocket and presents the single silver key in the middle if his palm, gesturing for Harry to take it. Harry frowns, but takes the key.
"Guess that means you're gone then? Forever?" He asks turning a step away.
"Well I. I just thought. We knew it would happen at some point haz." Harry's heart jumps with the familiar nickname. God that stupid nickname. "It can't always be Louis and Harry"
"I know, I can tell when I've been replaced." Harry mutters
"Harry I'm not replacing you. It's not like we're never going to see each other again we are just moving in together. That's what couples do when they get engaged!"
"HA!" Harry's spits. Engaged. The urge to vomit suddenly becomes overwhelming. "Of course you're blind" he breathes and turns back to face Louis.
"It's alright I get it." He says before turning on his heel and walks away from him and into the kitchen. Louis follows, an unsettling feeling in his stomach. He pauses in the doorway, leaning against the frame watching Harry open the cupboard door and reach for a glass, eyes sweeping the stretch of his torso as his shirt rides up the slightest. He turns on the tap, watching the water fill into the glass and taking a sip as Louis says "your playing this like a child."
Harry almost spits out his water as he whips around but before he can open his mouth to speak, Louis is already talking.
"I'm trying to move on with my life. We can't travel the world forever. We are going to have to settle down at some point and I don't want to be alone for it."
Harry's grip on the glass tightens.
"What makes you think I want to be alone for it?" He almost spits, hearing the venom in his own voice.
"You don't have to Harry that's what I'm telling you. You just have to find the right girl." Harry almost cringes at the word and he sets his glass down forcefully onto the counter top, it almost breaks. He turns to look out he kitchen window, gripping the edge of the counter until his knuckles turn white.
He takes a deep breath his thoughts spinning, his heart pumping anger into his system but it immediately turns to panic when he hears Louis start to walk away.
"Please don't leave." He stays and the footsteps pause
"I'm sorry Harry" and he starts walking again
"Louis wait." When he hears Louis stop walking once again, he pauses gaining courage and then quickly turns and walks Louis back against the wall, pinning him there with his body, and then he's there. Pressing his lips against Louis', feeling the stubble against his face. It wasn't the way Harry wanted their first kiss to be; it was pleading, tears slipping their way down Harry's cheeks his hand on Louis' hip, the other brushing his cheek.
It only lasts a moment before Louis' hand lands on Harry's chest carefully pushing his away and as their lips break break Harry breaths "I love you Lou"
Louis shakes his head and Harry looks down nodding
"I can't-"
"It's alright. I knew it wouldn't happen I just-I just needed to know"
He steps back and Louis walks to the hallway grabbing the box and opening the door, Harry just watches.
Just as Louis is about the door he looks back, seeing puffy faced Harry leaning against the wall by the kitchen.
"I'm sorry Harry. I'll see you around" he says before giving a sad smile and shutting the door.
