It was the party of the century. Audrey turned 16 and threw a party as extravagant as she was. She invited the whole school and everyone was having a ball. Or almost everyone.
Jane hadn't wanted to go to the party, but her mother insisted she go out and have fun. However Jane was not having fun. Someone had somehow managed to sneak in alcohol and now many of her classmates were drunk. The sheer amount of people made Jane want to crawl in a corner. The overwhelming scent of alcohol and teenage desperation made her feel queasy. She needed some fresh air.
She managed to make her way through the crowd and out into the garden. There were not nearly as many people outside, just a few couples making out. Jane kept walking until she reached the fountain. She sighed and sat down. She felt like she could breathe again. Unfortunately for her, she didn't notice there was someone else there. And they didn't notice either.
"Jane?" Someone tapped her shoulder. She screamed and fell into the fountain. "Oh my gosh!"
Someone grabbed her flailing arms and pulled her out of the water. Jane felt like crying. She was completely wet and her clothes were ruined. She was such an embarrassment.
"I'm so sorry." Jane looked up to see that the person responsible was none other than Carlos DeVil. "I didn't mean to scare you."
"How do I know that?" Jane asked. "How do I know that it wasn't your wickedness? How do I know that you didn't purposely scare me? Because that would seem like something a VK would do."
Carlos looked hurt. "Well, ok, if that's how you feel then who I am to stop you. Just for the record, I would never do that, especially to a pretty girl like you." Carlos turned and left to go back into the party, leaving a very wet, very cold, and very regretful Jane.
Jane went home and tried her best to avoid her mother, with surprising success. She showered and got ready for bed. She couldn't sleep thinking about her cruel words to Carlos.
Jane felt like an idiot. She needed to apologize to Carlos. She looked around her room where she spotted her stash. She looked at the clock. It was midnight, way past curfew. It wasn't breaking the rules if you don't get caught, right?
*************Carlos laid on his bed, sleep evading him. Between Jay's snoring and his guilt over Jane, he really couldn't shut his eyes. He was a screw up, that much he knew, so he didn't blame Jane for being mad at him for knocking her into the fountain. But the words she said to him were very hurtful. It had been two months since the coronation, so he felt that he had proven himself, that they all had. And for Jane to say she didn't trust his intentions, that was a low blow. Especially because he really liked Jane. But she would never like him.
He heard a knock on his door, snapping him out of his thoughts. He looked at the clock and saw that it was well past curfew. He wondered what Mal or Evie needed, since they were the ones who usually woke him up at this hour.
He opened the door and was surprised to see Jane in a nightgown and fuzzy mouse slippers.
"H-hey Carlos," she greeted shyly.
"J-Jane what- what are you d-doing here?" He mentally slapped himself for stuttering like and idiot. "It's past midnight. You could get in trouble."
"I know, but I really needed to talk to you," Jane said.
Carlos blushed. "You're willing to get in trouble with your mom just because you want to talk to me?"
"Yes," Jane said blushing. "Look, I'm so sorry for what I said earlier. I really shouldn't have said what I did and I know you must hate me-"
"But I don't," Carlos interrupted."
"What?"
"I don't hate you," Carlos explained shyly. "Honestly."
Jane smiled and blushed. "I wanted to apologize for earlier. I'm such a screw up and I know your didn't mean for me to fall in the fountain. I want to make it up to you."
"How?"
"With kisses."
Carlos eyes popped out of their sockets. The color drained from his face, his ears bright red. "W-w-what?"
Jane reached into the pocket of her robe and produces a handful of candy. "Hershey kisses. I heard you like chocolate."
Carlos relaxed knowing what Jane meant. He stuck out his hand and she gave him the chocolate.
"Well goodnight," Jane chirped as she headed Bach to her dorm as if nothing had happened. Carlos gingerly closed the door and tried to get his heartbeat to slow down.
"I'm such an idiot," Carlos chuckled, looking down at his hand. Yet he wondered if one day Jane could give a real kiss.
